PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball finished up their weekend series on Monday afternoon with an 18-6 loss to UT Permian Basin.
The Hounds struggled to get going on a rescheduled Monday afternoon game, surrendering seven runs in the opening frame, and never got back on track for the remainder of the contest. Three more runs in the top of the second for the Falcons put Eastern New Mexico down 10-0 before the Hounds struck for four runs in the bottom half of the second.
Freshman
Jude Perea led off the best inning of the afternoon for the Hounds with a double to left center before advancing to third on a fly out from
Ross Montoya a batter later. Two consecutive hit batters allowed Perea to come across for the first run of the afternoon for the Hounds.
Junior
Daniel Hunt came up with a two-out single later in the frame that scored two before two more hit batters sent the fourth and final runners across home plate for Eastern New Mexico in the inning. The 10-4 deficit wouldn't last long however as UT Permian Basin produced five more runs in the top half of the third inning to go up 15-4.
Freshman
Camden Matthews scored all the way from first base in the bottom of the third on a Montoya double down the right field line to notch one of the two additional runs Eastern New Mexico would be able to manage for the remainder of the ball game. Senior
Ryan Anderson drove in junior
Trevor Moses in the bottom of the fourth after Moses led off the inning with a double to post the other run of the afternoon for the Hounds.
Senior
Blake Frye provided a bright spot on the mound for the Greyhounds as he struck all three batters out he faced in the seventh and final inning of the ball game.
Eastern New Mexico will return home for the second weekend in a row this weekend for a four game series against Oklahoma Christian beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
