PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico sophomores
Zamorye Cox and
Joe Conway have been selected as the Sophomore Male and Female Athletes of the Year as voted upon by ENMU athletic department staff members and head coaches.
Each student-athlete was nominated by their respective head coach for consideration for the award based upon their outstanding athletic performances during the 2019-20 season. Both Cox and Conway were recognized at season's end as top underclassman in their respective sports across the Lone Star Conference and will be vital contributors for both program's in the next two seasons of their career.
Cox led the Eastern New Mexico women's basketball program to their second-best season in the program's 45-year history, putting together an overall record of 22-9 and securing a third NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in the last four years. The Portales, N.M. native was especially productive in the late stages of the season, scoring 15 or more points in six out of the last seven games she competed in.
Three of those seven contests came in the LSC Postseason Tournament in which Cox was named to the 2020 All-Tournament Team after averaging 19.7 points, 6.3 assists and 3.3 steals in the tournament. She was named an All-LSC Second Team selection and was twice named the athletic department's Greyhound of the Month selection in December and March.
Cox led the Hounds for the season in scoring with an average of 13.1 points per contest and ranked second in the Lone Star Conference with an average of 4.7 assists per contest. As instrumental as Cox was in the success of the Greyhound offense, her perimeter defensive talent was just as evident as she led the conference with a school record 83 steals on the year.
Conway was the leading goal scorer on the season for an Eastern New Mexico men's soccer program that recorded the highest single-season win total in program history with 12 wins on the season. Conway totaled seven goals on the season and was named an All-LSC Third Team selection at season's end.
The Newcastle, England native ranked seventh in the LSC in goals scored and points, accumulating a team high 17 points throughout the season. He was instrumental in the early season success for the Hounds, scoring game-winning goals against non-conference opponents Dixie State and Westminster to push the team's record to 6-0 to start the season.
Conway and the Hounds rose to as a high as no. 9 in the national polls last fall and took down three nationally-ranked opponents throughout the season. He finished the season ranked second on the team with 19 shots on goal and also totaled three assists.
