Volleyball Push Win Streak To Three Straight Games, 3-1 Over Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – After winning against Cameron University on Friday evening, Eastern New Mexico volleyball closed out the weekend with a 3-1 win over Midwestern State University on Saturday afternoon in Wichita Falls, Texas. ENMU improve to 4-15 on the year, with a 4-7 conference record, MSU drop to 3-17 overall, with an LSC standing of 1-11.
 
ENMU were out matched by the Mustangs in the opening set, 25-20. The Mustangs used 8-3 run to end the first set, after trailing 21-20, to hold a 1-0 set lead.
 
The Greyhounds jumped out quickly in the second set, taking an early 7-4 lead. With the score at 10-9 ENMU, Jasmine Gannon supplied a kill and then found three consecutive service aces to boost the ENMU advantage to 14-9. MSU worked their way back and tied the Hounds at 24-24. From then, Jordan O'Connor-Dempsey found a kill and the Mustangs were called for a ball handling error, giving ENMU the second set, 26-24.
 
MSU jumped out to an early lead in the third set, 10-7, but that sparked a large stretch of points for the Greyhounds. With the score at 10-7 MSU, the Hounds flipped the score to 21-16 in their favor, including a 5-0 streak. During the run, Adriana Puni and Mikaela Garvin found a block, while Gannon and Puni found kills. In the end, ENMU grabbed the third set 25-19, taking a 2-1 set lead.
 
The Hounds were locked in for the fourth set, starting on a 9-2 run. Garvin found four kills in the opening part of the set, with O'Connor-Dempsey and Puni also adding a kill. Eastern never lost the lead in the fourth frame and had a lead as large as 11 points. The Hounds finished the set on a 6-1 streak, with four kills and one block down the final stretch, 25-14. ENMU walked away 3-1 winners over Midwestern.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds bested the Mustangs in kills (53-43), aces (9-8), assists (49-39). While holding the edge defensively, 62-50 on digs, and dominating the net, 14-4 on blocks.
  • Gannon was at the top of the Hounds attack, with 13 kills and providing six service aces. Garvin and O'Connor-Dempsey each found 10 kills, while Kali Nelson and Puni added eight kills of their own.
  • Rae Sapiga ran the offense with 23 assists, while Qitana Sapiga added 18 assists.
  • Daejia Rodriguez led the defensive effort with 14 digs, while Q. Sapiga provided 12 digs.
  • Puni covered the net with 11 total blocks (two solo, nine assists), with Garvin providing seven block assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Q. Sapiga posted their third consecutive double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs, it's their fourth double-double of the season.
  • Puni was just short of a triple-double, finishing with eight kills, eight digs, and 11 total blocks. Puni also set career highs in kills (8), points (14.5), and total blocks (11).
  • In terms of program history, Puni tied a program record 11 total blocks in a match, with Grace George also finding 11 total blocks in a 4-set match against Texas Women's on Sept. 25, 2004.  
  • Gannon matched a program high six service aces (also a personal career high) in a match, and is just the second Greyhound to achieve the feat in four sets, with Caitlin Murphy finding six service aces on Nov. 3, 2009, against New Mexico Highlands.
  • O'Connor-Dempsey posted a career high in kills (10), with Garvin finding a career best in total blocks (7).
  • As a team, Eastern found a season high 24 block assists, and a season best of 14 total blocks.
  • The Hounds avenged their loss to the Mustangs earlier this season, 3-0 on Sept. 10. ENMU now hold a series advantage over MSU, 22-19.
  • Eastern New Mexico return to the floor Friday, Oct. 29, for a home contest against Texas A&M International University. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
