4th & 1: Simon Fraser

SFU visits ENMU for LSC matchup for first time

PORTALES, N.M. – Ohhhh ENMU! The NCAA's only Canadian program will be coming south to take on Eastern New Mexico football Saturday night.

The matchup will be the first in program history as Simon Fraser is welcomed to the Lone Star Conference as a football only member. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. kickoff and tickets are still available for purchase online at goeasternathletics.com/tickets

Before the Red Leafs get to the Land of Enchantment, please take a look at the 4th & 1:

First Down – Defensive Improvement
Saturday's game against No. 3 Angelo State proved to be a defensive affair that saw Eastern New Mexico take the first points via a pick six from Caden Ochoa. Although ENMU allowed 21 points in the first quarter, they only allowed a single touchdown in the final three quarters. The Hounds also limited the LSC's preseason player of the year, Nate Omayebu III, to 65 yards on 14 carries. They also held ASU to less than a 50% passing completion rate.

Second Down – Running for Centuries
Isaiah Tate hit the century mark for the second time this season as he put down 103-yard on 27 attempts. His big night allowed Eastern to keep the second half at a standstill, but it was not enough to clinch the upset for the Greyhounds.

Third Down – Familia Time
Saturday is for the family as the game will be the annual Family Day. Festivities include tailgates and various events on ENMU's campus on Friday and Saturday. Kids are encouraged to play at the kid zone sponsored by Portales Fun Center and students are eligible to be participants in the US Bank FG Challenge and the Forrest Tires Tire Flip Challenge.

Fourth Down – All Up In The Air
The Red Leafs average 39.3 yards per game on the ground and throw for 193.5 yards per contest. SFU does not have a single rusher with 100 or more yards through the first four games of the season. Simon Fraser throws one interception per game and holds a minus three turnover ratio. The program also struggles moving the ball down the field as they have only had four trips inside the red zone.

& 1 – Tackle Battle
For those who have not been following the 4th & 1 or don't actively check out ENMU football stats, the tackling statistics for the Hounds is probably just an afterthought. However, the race has been steadily back-and-forth week by week between Cameron Santa Cruz and Zerrian Meander. Santa Cruz has already hit the same total of tackles as a year ago with 46 and his teammate is at 45 through six games. The rankings for first and second on the team in tackles has switched for three straight weeks and will be a note to watch as both Greyhounds have provided valuable support for Eastern's defense in 2022.
