Men's soccer beats No. 8 Midwestern State

Strong play from Hounds backline, underclassmen leads program to upset victory

PORTALES, N.M. – The fireworks were out as Eastern New Mexico played in the first NCAA men's soccer game played in the Land of Enchantment since 2019.

The Greyhounds beat No. 8 Midwestern State in a stunning match at Greyhound Stadium, 1-0.

Eastern shutout a team who was second-best in goals scored (21) in the Lone Star Conference.

The lineup for ENMU featured two juniors, three sophomores, and ten freshmen on the night. The youthfulness of the program did not phase the lads as they did not let up many successful chances to the Mustangs.

Paul Waschkau's night was kept to five shots stopped thanks to fantastic defensive play from Kenny Leway and Mathieu Beuvain among many others.

After a great duel on the pitch over the first 40 minutes of action, ENMU struck gold in the 43rd minute as Jonathan De Motta put a nice touch to Ben Sauerländer for the only score of the night.

The second half saw the Hounds lockdown on defense to keep the clean sheet.

Midwestern State had a handful of chances with three shot attempts apiece from Mere Escobar and Eduardo Cerna in the second half. MSU had 13 total attempts after being limited to three in the first half. Only five of those shots were on frame though.

"I am proud of the way that our group competed from 0:00 to 90:00," said head coach Brandon Misuraca. "Getting a win over a top-10 team in the country with only two upperclassmen on the field is an amazing way to restart NCAA men's soccer in the state of New Mexico."

The victory brings the reestablished program to 4-3-1 on the season. Next up for Eastern is a trip to face DBU, Saturday night, at 12 p.m. MT.
