Women's Basketball Moves Past Fort Lewis, 73-58, In Season Opening Win

The Greyhounds outscored the Skyhawks 44-24 in the second half during the comeback win.

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – A second half surge boosted Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball past Fort Lewis College, 73-58, in Las Vegas, N.M. The Greyhounds move to 1-0 overall, while Fort Lewis slips to 0-1.
 
The Skyhawks raced out to an early 11-0 lead in the opening three minutes of the contest. Bella Stone ended the scoreless start with two free throws, putting ENMU on the board. Stone then started a short spurt for the Greyhounds in a 10-3 stretch hitting a three pointer. The streak consisted of a basket from Deja Adrian and KiKi Roberts, while Edecia Beck converted layup and hit the following free throw after getting fouled. FLC kept its advantage after the first period, 21-14.
 
Eastern brought the game within one possession to start the second frame, with the Greyhounds hitting four free throws and Adrian connecting on a jumper. The Hounds contested every Fort Lewis advance with a basket to keep the contest tight. The Skyhawks took a 34-29 lead into the locker room.
 
At the start of the third quarter, Fort Lewis expanded its lead to as many as 10 points (43-33) with 7:30 remaining in the frame. From then, Eastern took over offensively erupting for a 16-4 stretch to go ahead 49-47 with 10 minutes to play. Adrian started the streak with a layup and knocked down a three. Beck hit two free throws, then Adrian and Stone recorded a field goal, and Julieta Ceja registered four free throws to give ENMU its first lead of the game.
 
Once ahead, ENMU never looked back as they added onto its lead in the final stanza. A 10-3 scoring run ensued for the Greyhounds, with Adrian and Beck each knocking down a three pointer. In the end, ENMU walked away with a 73-58 win over Fort Lewis.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Hounds finished with 39.7% (23-58) shooting from the field, 30.4% (7-23) at a distance, and 64.5% (20-31) from the foul line. The Skyhawks calculated a 42.3% (22-52) field goal percentage, 33.3% (6-18) from behind the arc, and 66.7 % (8-12) at the free throw line.
  • Eastern pulled down more rebounds, 33-28, and beat Fort Lewis on the fast break, 17-2.
  • Adrian controlled the offense with 22 points on 8-14 shooting and a knocked down three triples. Saunders led ENMU on the glass with seven rebounds.
  • Beck provided 15 points from the bench, sinking all nine of their free throws. Stone and Roberts both reach double figures for points with 10 points each.
  • Stone and Beck each contributed six rebounds, while Adrian and Roberts collected five boards.
  • Defensively, Beck poked away four steals, with Stone finishing with three. Stone also led ENMU with five assists on the night.

"I'm really proud of our poise tonight," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Meghan De los Reyes. "Fort Lewis came out strong and it took us a bit to settle in, but we stayed the course and relied on our defense and rebounding to get us back in and carry us through the second half,".
