PORTALES, N.M. – ENMU men's basketball is continuing its hot play after a 74-53 victory over Northern New Mexico, Wednesday night.
The Greyhounds scored the first seven points of the game and never gave up the lead.
Defensively, Eastern created several problems for the Eagles as the visitors turned the ball over 27 times and shot 31.6% from the field on the night.
"I loved our effort on the defensive end," said head coach
Brent Owen. "Our switching really bothered them and our guys are getting better and better."
Four different Hounds (
Errol White,
Jahcoree Ealy,
Greg Johnson, and
Dwayne Chester III) had two steals in the game. Chester III's first steal came after he hit a layup on fastbreak to put ENMU up by 18 with 3:28 left in the first half. He snuck behind a player from Northern New Mexico and swiped the ball out of his hands.
"I feel like it showed effort and energy and that's what I want to bring to the team," said Chester III on the play he made in the opening stanza.
At the break, Eastern New Mexico led 35-21.
Midway though the final period, ENMU took charge and went on an 18-0 run to hold its biggest lead of the night, 63-35 with 5:04 remaining. The scoring stretch lasted 7:33 and NNMC had eight turnovers in that timespan.
Errol White registered his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 16 rebounds on top of a pair of blocks. The sophomore from Queens, N.Y. ranks fifth all-time in rebounds in a single game in program history.
"Errol's nose for the ball and his motor is something you really can't coach," said Owen on White and his play during the game. "It's an instinct and it's athletic ability, strength, and intelligence."
Joining White in double figure scoring was
Eze Dike (13 points) and
Jahcoree Ealy (10 points).
Guard
Greg Johnson also performed well during his 22 minutes on the floor. He finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
The team shot 44.3% from the field and outscored the Eagles in the paint, 46-22.
The Greyhounds return to the court on Saturday as they take on the University of the Southwest at 3 p.m. Entry is free if fans bring a canned good into the game.
