Women's Basketball Topples Northern N.M., 83-48

ENMU set a season best for made three pointers (11) in the game

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball closed out its non-conference schedule with an 83-48 over Northern New Mexico College, on Monday evening at Greyhound Arena. Eastern now hold a 5-2 overall record, currently on a four-game win streak. Northern N.M. slip to 3-12 on the season overall.
 
Deja Adrian started the scoring for the Greyhounds in what turned out to be a tough first quarter. Both teams struggled to get going offensively, with ENMU holding a 8-5 with just three minutes to play in the opening 10 minutes. Eastern ended the first quarter ahead 17-11 over the Eagles.
 
The second frame proved to be the difference in the game, with the Greyhounds outscoring the Eagles 25-6 in the quarter. It started with a 17-2 stretch over the first 5:58 of the period, with Lazurea Saunders connecting on a jumper. Later in the run, Corin Camara hit three consecutive threes and Edecia Beck drove in for two layups to go ahead 34-13. A late three from Ashley Shipley sent ENMU into halftime with a 42-17 lead.
 
Eastern's high scoring continued in the third quarter, increasing its advantage to 58-27 after another pair of Camara threes. Shipley scored the final points of the period for ENMU, hitting a layup and hitting a buzzer-beater three pointer to set the score at 65-36 after the third stanza.
 
The Greyhounds opened the final period on a 10-2 streak to go up 75-38. A pair of free throws gave ENMU its largest lead of the night at 80-40 with just 2:24 remaining in the contest. In the end, Eastern secured its biggest win of the season finishing 83-48 over the Eagles.

NOTABLE STATS

  • On the night, ENMU finished shooting 43.9% from the floor (29-66), an astounding 44.0% from behind the arc (11-25), and 77.8% at the foul line (14-18). The Eagles provided a stat line of 19-57 from the floor, just one three-pointer in the game, and 9-11 at the foul line.
  • Shipley finished as the game's top scorer with 17 points (3-5 from three), while Camara finished just behind with 15 points (5-6 from three), and Beck added 14 points to the Hounds effort (5-10 from the field).
  • KiKi Roberts and Adrian posted eight rebounds, with Julieta Ceja pulling down seven boards.
  • Marley Freeman paced the offense with six assists, while Beck led the defense with four steals during the game. Roberts supplied a pair of blocks in the game.

"Great team win tonight with our bench contributing 51 points," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Meghan De los Reyes. "Marley (Freeman) did a great job finding her teammates for six assists and Corin (Camara) really hunted her shot going 5-6 from the three point line. Everyone on the team scored and we did an amazing job collectively rebounding on both ends," said De los Reyes. "We look forward to carrying this momentum forward into Thursday's game against UT Tyler".

  • Every Greyhound scored during the game, with four Greyhounds setting new career highs for points.
  • Shipley supplied a season best 17 points on the night, while Camara posted a career best 15 points during the contest. Freeman provided a individual best of six points and six assists, and Alexandria Sariñana finished with a season high seven points.
  • The ENMU bench posted 51 points during the game, setting a season high in that statistic.
  • Eastern posted a season best as a team in points (83), made field goals (29), made three pointers (11), three-point field goal percentage (.440), rebounds (50), offensive rebounds (20), assists (16), and steals (15).
