#12 Angelo State Takes Series Opener Over Baseball, 25-4

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball fell in the series opener against #12 Angelo State University, 25-4 (7 Inn.). The Hounds move to 15-22 on the season, and 14-21 in LSC action. The Rams improve to 29-10 overall and 27-10 in the conference.
 
The Angelo State bats started quickly, picking up seven runs in the top of the first inning. All of the scoring in the first inning came with two outs. ASU added to its total in the third inning with two more runs. ENMU took back two runs in the bottom of the third frame. Camden Matthews started with a single to right field, then Cooper Hamilton brought him home with a triple to right center, for the Hounds first run, 9-1. Spencer Roach followed with an infield single to the shortstop for an RBI and another run on the board.
 
The #12 Rams didn't stop hitting as the game continued. ASU put up five runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth inning. In that time, another ENMU run crossed the plate in the fourth inning. A leadoff single from Andres Quintana put a runner on the bases and Jorge Colon reached on a hit by pitch. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Braeton Matthews brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Rams led 21-3 after five full innings.
 
Both teams scored in the final inning of action, with Angelo State adding four more insurance runs to hold a 25-3 lead. The Hounds scored the last run of the night, as Kian Johnston brought home a run after drawing a bases loaded walk. The game ended after seven inning, 25-4 Angelo State.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Seven different batters registered a hit in the game, and four different batters posted an RBI. Hamilton and Roach finished the game with an RBI and a hit.
  • Noah De La Riva is given the loss after two innings, giving up nine runs in nine runs. Stephen Rausa went 1.1 innings, with Robert Nidy tossing 2.2 innings. James Romero tossed one inning during the game.
  • Benjamin Elder picked up the win in 5.0 IP, giving up three runs with four strikeouts.

"Well, those are never games you want to be a part of, but it happens," said Head Baseball Coach Riley Price. "Everything they touched with the bat seemed to find a hole tonight, but sometimes that's baseball. On the mound, against good teams throwing strikes alone isn't good enough, we have to locate them and get ahead in the count more often," said Price. "Defensively, we have to slow the game down and take care of the baseball. Can't make mistakes against good teams because they will expose you in every facet and that's what happened tonight," said Price. "Tomorrow's a new day and we need to respond like I know we can".

  • ASU hold the all-time series lead 61-18 over the Hounds.
  • This is the first time the Hounds and Rams have played each other in Portales, since 2019.
  • Thomas Wisneski picked up his first base hit as a Greyhound in the seventh inning. 
  • Eastern look to bounce back tomorrow in the doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m. Each contest is scheduled for seven innings.
