Balanced Scoring Sends Texas A&M International Past Baseball, 7-2

LAREDO, TEXAS – Eastern New Mexico Baseball were taken down on Sunday afternoon, 7-2, against Texas A&M International. The Dustdevils complete the series sweep over the Hounds. Eastern slip to 15-29 on the season, and a 14-28 conference record. TAMIU improve to 17-29 on the season, and 17-27 in LSC play.

Both teams picked up a pair of early runs to start the game. First, Texas A&M International used a sacrifice fly and a pair of singles to score the games first two runs. In their first time hitting, the Dustdevils found four hits through the first seven batters. The Hounds responded in the next half inning, to bring the score to 2-2. Braeton Matthews worked a two-out walk, and Jack Thompson singled to put two runners on. Sammy Williamson followed with a single to score B. Matthews, and Thompson was able to score on an error from the TAMIU left fielder.

The Dustdevils returned to the scoreboard with two more runs in the fourth inning. A lead off double set a runner in scoring position, and moved to third on a groundout. With runners on the corners, a wild pitch advanced the runners one base, taking a 3-2 lead. Soon after, a reach on error added another run for TAMIU, 4-2.

The Hounds bats were finding holes in the Dustdevils defense, but couldn't string together a series of hits to score more runs. In the seventh frame, the home team added to its lead with three more runs for a 7-2 advantage. Texas A&M International held-out over the final two innings, taking the contest 7-2 over ENMU.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Hounds hitters picked up eight base hits in the game, coming from six different ENMU batters.
  • Spencer Roach and Williamson each went 2-4 in the game, while Nick Schifftner had the lone extra base hit for the Greyhounds. Williamson recorded the lone RBI.
  • Dalton Thatcher and Tommy Perez combined for eight innings on the mound, with the former receiving the loss. Thatcher finished five innings in the game, giving up four runs on seven hits with two K's. Perez went three innings of work conceding three runs (one earned run).

FROM THE SOURCE

"Once again, offensively we had opportunities early to get a lead as (Dalton) Thatcher was holding them to give us a chance, but we could not string anything together," said Head Baseball Coach Riley Price. "(Tommy) Perez didn't throw bad either, but routine errors allowed their offense to extend their lead and to run away with the game. We have to hit the rest button this week and find that chip on our shoulder that was missing the last two weeks," said Price. "I have to hand it to TAMIU, as they played clean team baseball and capitalized on just about every mistake we made all weekend".

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Roach recorded his 19th multi-hit game of the season, and extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games. Camden Matthews also reached 10 consecutive games with a hit.
  • This is the first sweep by either team in the all-time series between the two programs. Texas A&M International hold the all-time series record 7-3 over ENMU.
  • The Hounds return to Portales for their final home series of the season, facing off against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The four-game series will begin Friday, Apr. 29, and conclude on Sunday, May, 1.
