th & 1:
First Down: Season Opening Win
ENMU took down New Mexico Highlands, 34-18, to begin the 2022 season last week. The Hounds were led by transfer quarterback
Kason Martin who 27-for-34 for 314 yards and three touchdowns. He connected twice with junior wideout
Asa Wondeh and found
Bryzai White for the other score. Starting running back,
Isaiah Tate ran for 94 yards and found the endzone once in the victory over the Cowboys. Eastern's defense held NMHU to just 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the night.
Second Down: High Honors
The Lone Star Conference named two Greyhounds as conference players of the week Monday afternoon. Every week the league honors three players from the ten member institutions based on the prior week performance.
Asa Wondeh was named the offensive player of the week for his 189-yard, two touchdown performance against NMHU. Sophomore kicker
Cooper Hamilton earned special teams player of the week recognition after nailing both field goal attempts (39 yd, 46 yd) and all four of his extra point opportunities.
Third Down: Mustangs Minutes
Midwestern State won the regular season conference title a year ago and began the season ranked the No. 24 team in the country. Last week they opened the season with a 59-27 loss to CSU-Pueblo. In the game, the Mustangs had a combined 308 yards on offense, but their defense allowed a conference-high 576 yards. Neiko Hollins threw for 236 yards to lead MSU. The rushing game proved to be the weakness for Midwestern State as their two leading rushers totaled 25 and 20 yards, respectively.
Fourth Down: Red Zone
Both times Eastern possessed the ball in the red zone, they scored. The first came from a
Cooper Hamilton field goal while the second trip for the Hounds resulted in a third quarter touchdown rush by
Isaiah Tate.
