Lubbock Christian Holds Women's Basketball, 77-55

Four student-athletes reached double-figures for scoring.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Woman's Basketball held the Lady Chaps in the opening half, but a late surge put Lubbock Christian past ENMU 77-55 on Thursday evening at Rip Griffin Arena. The Greyhounds shift to 7-7 over, while holding a 4-5 LSC record, and 2-3 in West Division games. The Lady Chaps move to 12-5 overall, bolstering a 7-2 LSC standing, and 4-1 in West Division play.

The Greyhounds found themselves trailing the Lady Chaps in the opening stages of the first quarter, 7-6 LCU. LCU then opened an 8-0 streak, going ahead 15-6 with 3:30 minutes to play in the period. Eastern ended the quarter with seven points, Bella Stone finishing a layup, with Deja Adrian contributing two layups and a free throw, LCU 17-13.
 
ENMU took charge to open the second frame, outscoring the Chaps 8-5 to set the score at 24-23 LCU with 5:20 to play in the half. A back and forth ensued, with the Greyhounds taking the lead over Lubbock Christian 30-29. Lazurea Saunders connected on a triple, followed by a basket from a Edecia Beck, with a Beck steal leading to a Saunders layup to take the advantage. However, LCU closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to end the half 35-30 LCU.
 
After LCU extended their lead to 39-32 to open the period, the Greyhounds surged back with a 10-5 streak to pit the score at 44-42 LCU. Stone delivered two baskets, while Adrian converted a layup of their own and four free throws. However, the home team closed the final 5:40 of the quarter on a 10-0 stretch to take a 54-42 lead into the quarter.
 
In the final quarter, Lubbock Christian held the Greyhounds to just 3-13 shooting, while converting on offense 10-13 from the field. In the end, LCU finished the evening with a 77-55 victory over the Greyhounds.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds held a 29.5 FG% (18-61), while sinking three triples during the game, and sinking 16-17 free throws (94.1%). Lubbock Christian finished the night shooting 60.4% (29-48), finishing 45.0% from behind the arc (9-20), and 10-14 at the foul line (71.4%).
  • Adrian led all scorers with 18 points, while Stone and Saunders added 13 points each, and Beck chipped in with 10 points.
  • On the glass, Saunders and Adrian each picked up seven boards, while Stone secured five rebounds.
  • Saunders posted a team best three assists, while Stone poked away four steals.

"We did a tremendous job defensively in the first half to take away their post play and create turnovers," said Head Woman's Basketball Coach Meghan De los Reyes. "I'm proud of our rebounding effort, holding LCU to one offensive rebound and winning the overall margin. Every one of our players competed extremely hard tonight, we had 13 more shot attempts, but the ball wasn't going in the basket for us tonight,"  said De los Reyes. "We've got a great game plan for Saturday and cant wait to get up to Canyon".

  • 94.1% is the highest free throw shooting percentage by the Greyhounds this season, beating their pervious high of 89.3% against Angelo State.
  • Saunders set a season high three assists during the game.
  • Defensively, Stone tied a season best for steals with four, while Ashley Shipley picked up a season high three steals during the contest.
  • Eastern New Mexico will look rebound against #20 West Texas A&M on Saturday, Jan. 14, with first tip scheduled for 12 p.m.
