Last Second Layup Sinks Women's Basketball Against Texas A&M-Kingsville, 50-48

The Greyhounds outrebounded the Javelinas 46-33 during the game

PORTALES, N.M. – A last second basket sunk Eastern New Mexico Woman's Basketball against Texas A&M-Kingsville, 50-48, on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena. ENMU fall to 8-9 overall, and 5-7 in LSC play. The Javelinas move to 10-8 on the season while sporting a 7-5 conference record.

After the Javelinas opened the contest with a layup to start the game, Bella Stone knocked down two three to swing the lead to the Greyhounds, 5-2.  From then, both teams went back and forth trading baskets until Texas A&M-Kingsville took a 15-10 lead. The Greyhounds closed the gap to end the period, with Lazurea Saunders and Stone each hitting a jumper.
 
ENMU and TAMUK found their way to the foul line to start the second quarter, with Texas A&M-Kingsville holding a 23-20 lead halfway through the period. However, the Greyhounds went on an 8-0 run to go ahead 28-23. KiKi Roberts sparked the run with a layup, Stone knocked down a mid range jumper, and Saunders poured in two buckets. The Javelinas cut the lead to 28-27 ENMU heading into the half.
 
Ashley Shipley began the third quarter with a pair of three-pointers as the Greyhounds built a four point cushion, 31-27. Both teams had an answer for each other, with the contest being within just one possession. The Javelinas tied the score late in the period, 41-41, but a Corin Camara three at the buzzer give the Hounds a slight edge going into the final quarter, 44-41.
 
Both teams clamped down defensively in the final period, with TAMUK tying the score at 44-44. Edecia Beck replied with a layup to regain the lead, but the Javelinas scored two baskets over the next five minutes while holding Eastern scoreless, 48-46. With 20 seconds to play, Beck scored a vital bucket after an offensive rebound from Roberts to tie the contest at 48-48. However, the Javelinas scored with just a few tics remaining on the clock to take home a 50-48 win over the Greyhounds.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Both teams were held to tough shooting nights, with the Greyhounds posting a 29.5% field goal percent (18-61), while TAMUK finished 35.2% from the field (19-54). From three both teams were limited (ENMU 22.2%, 6-27, and TAMUK 20.0%, 5-25). At the foul line, Eastern finished 6-10 (60.0%), and the Javelinas went 7-9 from the line (77.8%).
  • Stone supplied 12 points to the Greyhounds cause, while Beck provided 10 points during the contest. Saunders added eight points, while Shipley and Camara each scored six points in the game.
  • On the glass, Saunders dominated with 13 rebounds (eight offensive, five defensive), and Beck popped up with 11 rebounds.
  • Additionally, Stone led the way with six assists and four steals for ENMU, while Shipley dished out three assists.

"Both teams played extremely hard today," said Head Woman's Basketball Coach Meghan De los Reyes. "Our defensive effort was outstanding, holding a very disciplined offense to 50 points and allowing only nine points in the fourth, but we struggled to put the ball in ourselves. We won the rebound battle and we are getting so much better as a team," said De los Reyes. "We are looking forward to this second half of our conference schedule, it's going to be competitive."

  • Beck picked up their second double-double of the season, accumulating 10 points and 11 rebounds. Saunders pulled down a career best 13 rebounds during the game.
  • Stone tied a season best for steals (4) and blocks (1). Roberts played a season high 26 minutes during the game.
  • The Greyhounds tied a season best four blocks during the game, tying the previous mark set against UT Tyler (12/15/22).
  • Tied a season best 23 offensive rebounds during the contest, with the Greyhounds recording similar marks against Midwestern State (1/7/23) and against Texas A&M International (1/17/23).
  • Eastern will head out on the road next week, starting in San Angelo, Texas against RV Angelo State University. First tip against the Rambelles is set for 4:30 p.m.
