PORTALES, N.M. – Despite outrushing Texas A&M-Kingsville, Eastern New Mexico football lost Saturday's Homecoming contest, 35-14.
Two freshmen led the Greyhounds offensively.
Elijah Zeh managed to carry the ball 22 times for 114 yards and a score. Clovis, N.M. native
Robert Nora took seven carries for 81 yards.
"I was really impressed with our two true freshmen running backs," said head coach
Kelley Lee after the game.
Nora helped tie the game at seven apiece early in the second quarter as he found open space for a 56-yard score.
Defensively, Eastern forced TAMUK to go 1-for-9 in third down situations. However, the Javelinas successfully converted both of their fourth down attempts in the second quarter leading to a pair of scores. Those conversions gave the visitors a 21-7 lead as the teams headed to the locker room.
The second half saw two different styles for both offenses.
For TAMUK, they posted two quick scoring drives taking less than 1:30 combined. For ENMU, their touchdown in the third down saw 19 plays over 7:47 on the clock.
The Greyhounds finished with 303 yards rushing with seven players carrying the ball at least three times.
Justin Brewer and
Matthew Quartieri paced the Hounds defensively with seven tackles each.
Kevin McCracken helped
Christian Carreathers collect a team sack. McCracken now has 2.5 sacks over the last four games. Brewer also had a sack in the matchup.
Eastern New Mexico will have a quick turnaround with a Thursday night road game against Lincoln (Mo.). The kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT at Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.
