Men's Soccer Concludes Season With Draw Against UT Tyler, 1-1

The Greyhounds missed postseason qualification by one point in the conference standings.

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Men's Soccer drew 1-1 against UT Tyler in the season finale at Greyhound Stadium on Wednesday evening. With a draw, ENMU slip out of Lone Star Conference Postseason contention. ENMU complete the 2023 campaign with a 4-7-6 overall record, with a conference standing of 2-3-4. Meanwhile, the Patriots end their season at 5-4-8, along with a 1-3-5 conference record.

Eastern dominated the opening fazes of the match, finding four shots in the first 20 minutes of the game. Shortly after, the Greyhounds opened the scoring with Colin Hyzy sweeping in an Ignacio Lopez corner kick to take the lead. A few moments later, Giani Mascarel struck the left post after dribbling past a handful of defenders on the left wing. ENMU took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
 
In the second half, UT Tyler evened up the score with their first shot on goal of the game in the 51st minute. A long throw-in bounced into the six-yard box, with the Patriots tying the match. Straight from the restart, Loris Tsiatsipy had a shot carom off the crossbar keeping the score at 1-1. The match opened up with each team having chances at goal, but the match remained tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Hyzy scored from the corner kick, with I. Lopez providing the assist. Ludwig Scherer and I. Lopez had a team-best three shots. Hugo Sacco faced four shots during the match, with just one shot going on goal.
  • For the Patriots, Thato Meko had the important touch to score the Patriots goal. Noriyuki Ito picked up an assist on Meko's goal. Meko created two shots for themselves in the match, while Andre Cavichione and Raul Carrillo both had one shot. Diego Berlingeri had three saves during the match for UTT.
  • ENMU dominated the chances with shots being 14-4, while Eastern held the edge in shots on goal (4-1). Both teams committed 11 fouls, while UTT had more corner kicks (6-4).

"Right before the match, we spoke about leaving everything out there on the pitch," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Brandon Misuraca. "The energy and effort was there the entire 90 minutes and the boys fought till the bitter end for a game winner. Overall, I'm proud of the growth of this young program," said Misuraca.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Hyzy scored their first career goal for the Greyhounds, while I. Lopez posted their third assist of the season.
  • Six Greyhounds played the entire 90 minutes of the match: Mathieu Beuvain, Abraham Lopez, Hyzy, Sacco, Scherer, and Colin Ulrich.
  • ENMU and UT Tyler played for the first time in Portales, with the two previous meetings being played in Tyler, Texas.
  • Eastern New Mexico end the season with a 4-7-6 record and a 2-3-4 conference record, missing the LSC Postseason Tournament by just one point. ENMU has all student-athletes eligible to return for next season.
