Volleyball Captures Five-Set Win Over WNMU, 3-2

ENMU end's the season on a positive note with a win over Western N.M.

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball capped the 2023 season with a thrilling five-set victory, 3-2, over Western New Mexico on Friday evening at Drag's Court. ENMU concludes the season at 11-20 overall with a 2-14 LSC record. Meanwhile, WNMU stand at 6-22 with a 2-13 LSC record.
 
The Greyhounds and Mustangs match swung back and forth, but ENMU came out on stop in five sets: 25-22, 25-20, 28-30, 23-25, and 15-7. The opening set was tight as it can be, but a late 5-1 run by ENMU led to an opening set win. In the next frame, Eastern produced a timely 6-1 run at the end of the set to take the second frame. Both teams were tied at 19-19, but ENMU took the set finishing with three straight kills.
 
After Western New Mexico took the third set, 30-28, and fourth set, 25-23, ENMU was down to their final set of the season and didn't back down. The Greyhounds were near perfect in the final set, scoring 15 points from 12 kills with zero errors on 18 attempts. ENMU used a 4-0 run to build a slight advantage, then finished the match with a 7-2 streak.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Leading the attack for the Greyhounds, Mikaela Garvin secured 19 kills, while Kali Nelson finished with 14 and Gracelyn Stubbs added 11 kills.
  • Stubbs paced the Hounds offense with 27 assists, while Kayla Ison contributed 25 assists.
  • Getsemani Carrasco capped off a fantastic individual season with 23 digs during the match, while Halle Sanders finished with 14 digs.
  • At the net, Stubbs powered the team with six total blocks and Garvin contributed five total blocks.
  • Eastern outpaced the Mustangs for kills (64-62), digs (78-63), and blocks (12-10).

"I'm super happy for the team, especially our seniors to finish the season on a positive note," said Head Volleyball Coach Sia Poyer. "And of course, all the seniors were such major contributors today".

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Carrasco finishes the season with a program season record of 5.53 digs per set, tying the previous mark set by Caitlyn Murphy in 2009. Additionally, Carrasco's 575 digs in one season are 4th most all-time and the most since Murphy in 2008 (661).
  • Garvin officially entered the top-10 for kills in program history with 883 kills, while Stubbs crossed into the top-ten for all-time points in program history (1102.5: 821 kills, 75 service aces, 67 solos blocks, and 277 block assists).
  • Stubbs marked the final game of the season with their 16th double-double of the season (27 assists, 11 kills).
