Men's basketball controls road game against No. 7 DBU, 104-94

Eastern New Mexico stays unbeatean in conference play with effective win over ranked Patriots on the road

DALLAS, Texas – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball knocked off No. 7 DBU on the road Saturday afternoon, 104-94, behind the most points scored by a Greyhound during this century.

The Patriots came into the game with a 7-0 (3-0 LSC) record and looking to continue their undefeated season. The Greyhounds had other plans.

"I am incredibly proud of our group," said head coach Brent Owen after the game. "They handled themselves well and played together against a DBU team who applied the most pressure I've ever coached against on the defensive end."

DBU jumped out to a 17-12 advantage over the first five minutes of the game as they connected on back-to-back three point shots and took their opportunity to score in the paint.

However, an 8-0 run sparked by two buckets from Ealy and a layup from Tre'Von Love and Lyron Bennett helped ENMU establish the lead for the rest of the contest.

By halftime, the Greyhounds got hot from behind the arc and held a 51-36 edge over the home side.

Eastern practically couldn't miss in the first half as they went 23-for-35 (65.71%) from the field and had scored 40 of their 51 points in the paint.

ENMU led by as many as 22 points (62-40, 16:45) until a 9-1 run by the Patriots in the latter half of the second period pushed it to just ten points. The Greyhounds managed to connect on 14 free throws in the final 3:22 of play to seal the deal and stay unbeaten in conference action.

"Our goal for this team is to have a chance to compete for a championship in the NCAA tournament," said Owen on the win. "Wins like this go a long way come March."

Five different Greyhounds scored in double figures. Jahcoree Ealy (42 pts), Mario Whitley (14 pts), Lyron Bennett (11 pts), Greg Johnson (11 pts), and Junior Hodnett (11 pts) were part of that crew. Ealy's 42 points are the most in a single game during the 21st century.

DBU is one of the better three-point shooting teams and ENMU's defense forced them to shoot just 7-for-29 (24.1%) from behind the arc.

Eastern New Mexico continued to share the ball effectively as they distributed 22 assists on 29 total field goals.

One major focus was getting around DBU's press. Eastern was guided by point guard Lyron Bennett as the lead player to help break the pressure defense and find ways to distribute the ball to setup the attack. The senior from Boston, Mass. finished with seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals along with his 11 points.

The Greyhounds will now focus towards Thursday night for a neutral floor contest with Northern New Mexico. The game will be played at Clovis High School.
