Women's Basketball Season Ends At Western New Mexico, 64-61

Edecia Beck produced a seaosn best performance of 22 points with nine made field goals

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball saw its season end with a nail biting 64-61 loss against Western New Mexico University. The Greyhounds end the season with a 12-15 overall record, while holding a 9-13 LSC record. Western New Mexico complete its season with a 10-16 record, along with a 8-14 LSC standing.

The pace of the game started slow as both teams were doing their best to work their way into the game. Eastern New Mexico were the first team to have a scoring run, with a 7-1 streak to end the opening quarter. Edecia Beck picked three points in the run, while KiKi Roberts converted two baskets, 12-9 ENMU after the first period.
 
Western New Mexico responded with a high flying second period to control the contest. After ENMU pickup up the first basket of the quarter, the Mustangs went on a 12-1 streak to leap over the Greyhounds 21-15. Marley Freeman connected on a three to stop the scoring, but Western entered the locker room with a four-point lead at the half, 26-22.
 
To begin the third period, Eastern started to connect from distance to get back into the game. Of its four made shots to start the second half, three of them were from range, with Ashley Shipley's three tying the score at 33-33 midway through the period. From that point, the home team scored seven straight points to go up 40-33, just for ENMU to score six straight points, with Beck and Alexandria Sariñana both scoring underneath and getting fouled. Western New Mexico finished with five points at the end of the frame, taking a 45-39 lead into the final 10 minutes.
 
The Greyhounds slowly started to catch the Mustangs in the fourth quarter by getting to the foul line, with Deja Adrian, Beck, and Shipley all scoring on trips to the charity stripe, 52-49 WNMU with 4:39 to play in the period. Western New Mexico were answering every ENMU basket down the stretch, leading the Mustangs to a 62-55 lead with just over a minute to play. Eastern was not done yet, a basket from Beck, a miss from Western, then a layup from Adrian set the game at 62-59 with 20 seconds to play. On the following possession, the Greyhounds forced a turnover and Beck finished underneath to send the Greyhounds within one point of WNMU with six seconds to play, 62-61. However, the Mustangs hit both free throws on the other end, and ENMU couldn't get a clean look from three at the end. The game ended 64-61 in favor of the Mustangs.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds completed the game with a 40.4% field goal percentage, while Western finished just beneath ENMU at 38.3%. Behind the arc, ENMU finished with a 23.3% three-point percentage with the Mustangs converting 30.0% of their opportunities. Eastern finished the contest with a 64.7% free throw percentage, compared to the 80.0% shooting from WNMU.
  • Beck led all scorers with 22 points, 9-16 from the field, with Adrian contributing 12 points during the contest.
  • Adrian pulled down a game high 12 rebounds, while Lazurea Saunders and Beck picked up five rebounds.
  • Shipley led the team with three assists and three steals, while Beck finished with one block in the game.

  • Beck finished with a season high 22 points during the game, making a season best nine field goals. Adrian's 12 rebounds marked a career high, completing their eighth double-double of the season.
  • The Greyhounds conclude its season with a 12-15 record, with a 9-13 LSC standing during the second season under Coach De los Reyes. Eastern will graduate three seniors this season: Saunders, Stacy Ajobiewe, and Julia Chavez.
