LUBBOCK, Texas – Eastern New Mexico softball went into the top of the seventh inning up 4-3 and secured the first two outs with ease. However, the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs plated one run off a double and forced the contest to enter the bottom of the frame.
Eyeing a chance to keep the game away from extra innings, ENMU took full advantage.
Chanler Groves began the inning on a four-pitch walk. In sequence,
Jennifer Gress and
Azalea Martinez hit singles to get the bases loaded. Six pitches later and the Greyhounds won on a walk-off walk.
"I want our team in pressure situations like this to determine how tough we can be and what we have to do as a team to comeback for a win," said head coach
Amanda Fefel after the win. "We had several players come off the bench who played a big role in this win. They fought until the last pitch and put a lot of pressure on the defense and pitcher in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win."
Brook Leger got the start in the circle for the Hounds. She dealt over the first four innings of the contest and had seven strikeouts. The senior ace came back into the game as she was called upon for the final out of the top of the seventh as UCCS held two runners in scoring position.
"I knew no matter what the defense had my back," said Leger on her coming into the game for the final out. "I felt confident in getting the last out."
Leger gave up her only run in the first inning as three of the first four hitters got on base for the Mountain Lions. That is when the cleanup hitter for UCCS drove in the leadoff hitter to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The first run for the Hounds came off a
Katelyn Cifuentes double scoring
Taighen Whitzel. Two innings later, Cifuentes drove-in
Aylene Lucero on a single to centerfield and
Jokaira Paredes grazed home plate after
Torianna Borunda attempted to steal second giving her teammate enough time to add another run.
Eastern New Mexico gave up two runs in the top of the sixth off a two-RBI homer.
Emma Southerland came into the contest with one out to get out of the potential jam and earned a strikeout on four pitches.
Kianna Galindo earned a leadoff single for Eastern to start the bottom frame of the sixth.
Mikenzey Patterson came in to pinch run for Galindo. Whitzel gave her team the lead with an RBI-double and the Greyhounds took the lead into the top of the seventh as UCCS did not allow the Greyhounds to plate another insurance run.
The Mountain Lions forced the game into the bottom of the seventh, but ENMU earned its third win of the season off a walk-off walk.
Next up for Eastern is a trip back to Lubbock for a doubleheader against Chadron State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. MT at Maner Park. The game will be livestreamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network through Lubbock Christian University.
