Cameron takes game one over ENMU softball

Doubleheader Sunday begins at 1 p.m. at Greyhound Softball Field

PORTALES, N.M. – A late night game under the lights at Greyhound Softball Field saw Cameron hold a 6-3 edge over Eastern New Mexico to take game one of a three-game series.

Brook Leger began the game in the circle for the Hounds and she struckout two batters in the first and forced a popup to second base to take the contest into the bottom half of the frame.

Alondra Vasquez got a two-out double to right center before the Aggies headed into the second.

CU did get two runners in scoring position in the second, but it took until the third for the visitors to get on the scoreboard. After Leger recorded her fifth strikeout to begin the third, the Aggies hit a deep shot to left center to give them the 1-0 lead. Despite getting runners on first and second, Cameron could not plate an additional run.

Leger got a base hit in the bottom half of the third, but no additional damage came until the fourth for the Hounds.

After a Jennifer Gress four-pitch walk, Valeria Contreras took a first-pitch ball and CU took a moment to gather thoughts and refocus with a meeting in the circle.

On the ensuing pitch, Contreras smashed a line drive shot over the right field fence. The Greyhounds took a 2-1 advantage.

The Aggies tied the game off a throwing error in the fifth and added extra cushion in the sixth as they scored four runs to increase the lead, 6-2.

The bottom half of the sixth saw Valeria Contreras single to third and a Jokaira Paredes double give Contreras enough room to score the third run of the contest for the Greyhounds. The opportunity to rally late in the game was not enough as Cameron came away with the game one victory.

"Overall I think tomorrow pitching wise we need to come out and execute early in the count," said head coach Amanda Fefel after the contest. "These are the games that are crucial and we're going to have to battle tomorrow."

Sunday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. If you are unable to join ENMU at Greyhound Softball Field, the game will be livestreamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network.
