FRISCO, Texas – A record-breaking year came to a close Friday night at the Comerica Center as Eastern New Mexico men's basketball fell to No. 22 West Texas A&M, 97-66, in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference tournament.
The two programs forced several turnovers and missed baskets over the opening four minutes leading to a 4-3 advantage for the Buffs.
WT came out of the under-16 timeout with a charge running to a 17-3 lead.
Over the course of the first half, the ranked foe went 18-for-31 (58.06%) from the field to take a 46-23 mark into intermission.
The Buffalos continued to play aggressive defensively in the second and the Greyhounds turned the ball over 25 times over the 40-minute contest.
"I wish our season wouldn't have ended like this because this group deserved more," said head coach
Brent Owen during the postgame press conference. "I think we can cut down nets here. It just takes time."
Junior guard
Greg Johnson scored a game-high 21 points as he hit three shots from behind the arc.
Jahcoree Ealy also scored in double figures for the Hounds as he provided 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Eleven different players on both teams scored in the contest. The Buffs move onto the semifinals of the tourney and the Hounds finish the 2022-23 campaign after a year that saw them attain the most wins since the early 2000s and the most conference wins since the 1950s when the institution played in the now defunct New Mexico Athletic Conference (Frontier).
