PORTALES, N.M. – The first road game of the season for Eastern New Mexico football is tomorrow at 11 a.m. MT as the Greyhounds go toe-to-toe with future Lone Star Conference foe Sul Ross State. Before the second game of the 2023 campaign, please take a look at the 4th & 1 Preview:
First Down: Greyhounds Win – Eastern New Mexico got off to an ideal start to the 2023 season after a 28-26 victory over in-state opponent New Mexico Highlands. Quarterback
Mario Sanchez found the endzone three times on the ground. The performance marked the first time an ENMU player ran for multiple touchdowns in a single contest since 2021. The defense forced a pair of fumbles and did not allow NMHU to score during both of their two-point conversion attempts. The win improved Eastern's win streak over the Cowboy to four games.
Second Down: POW Williams – Monday brought great news to the Greyhounds as senior
Eric Williams earned Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week recognition. The linebacker had a career-high game with 12 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup. Williams attributed the honor as one of his all-time favorite football memories in a postgame interview. The honor is the first since ENMU earned two player of the week nods for a win over West Texas A&M in November 2022.
Third Down: Who Are The Lobos – Sul Ross State comes into the matchup with an 0-1 record after a close 42-28 loss to Western New Mexico. The Lobos caught an early 21-7 advantage, but WNMU found a way to finish the game with 28 unanswered points. Four different receivers caught touchdown passes for SRSU in the battle. Andrew Martinez is the quarterback for the program and he went 23-for-42 for 332 yards. He was sacked twice and threw a pair of interceptions in the latter part of the game.
Fourth Down: SRSU Defensive Unit – The Lobos have four players who total five tackles or more. Those include Jade Rios (12), Javeon Moses (8), Brendon Martin (6), and Dayln Dunbar (5). Freshman Kendrick Allen recorded a forced fumble in his first game as a Lobo. Senior Elijah Gomez made his presence known in the secondary with three pass breakups. The group allowed Western New Mexico to gain 542 total yards.
