PORTALES, N.M. – For just the second time in program history, Eastern New Mexico men's basketball scored 100+ points for a seventh time in a single season. Tonight, the Greyhounds held on to a 108-91 win over Midwestern State.
The win moves the Hounds to 6-2 in Lone Star Conference action and 2-2 in divisional play.
"When we're shooting it well, we are really hard to beat," said head coach
Brent Owen after the win. "We're clicking on offense."
Anytime a team scores more than 100 points, it is probably a good sign. Today, it was a great sign for ENMU. The Hounds went 38-for-70 (54.3%) from the floor and saw four players connect for double digits.
Little Rock, Arkansas native
Greg Johnson was on fire offensively for the Hounds. He was 14-of-19 from the floor and drained 6-of-9 shots from deep range. Overall, he scored a career-best 39 points and added six assists and six rebounds.
"My shot was feeling good," said Johnson after the game. "Big thanks to Jahcoree (Ealy) and the rest of my teammates because they were getting in the gap and hitting me."
Jahcoree Ealy had a season-best eight assists over 36 minutes of play. The LSC's leading scorer found various ways to be an efficient teammate despite scoring just 12 points. He added six rebounds and a blocked shot.
Eastern tied a season-high with 13 made three-pointers. Alongside Johnson, Rio Rancho, N.M. native
Junior Hodnett stayed consistent from behind the arc. He connected on 5-of-6 from long range and converted another field goal to score 17 total points. For the first time in his career, Hodnett has scored in double digits in three-straight games.
Midwestern State only made 40.5% of the shots from the floor and were outscored in the paint, 46-26.
Eastern New Mexico now sits in fifth place in the conference standings and it does not get any easier as the Hounds host the first and third place teams this weekend at Greyhound Arena.
ENMU will see (RV) Lubbock Christian Thursday night and No. 4 West Texas A&M Saturday evening.
