PORTALES, N.M. – Two high-powered offenses showcased at Greyhound Arena Saturday afternoon with No. 2 West Texas A&M pulling away with a narrow 89-87 win over Eastern New Mexico.
"I felt like we fought really hard tonight. Really proud of how our guys battled back," said head coach
Brent Owen after the game. "We took a two-point lead. It was big time players making big time shots. It was a real college basketball environment."
The Greyhounds saw themselves down by 20 points (67-47) with 12:49 to go. Slowly, but surely the Hounds decreased the lead. With 5:48 a shot from behind the arc by
Junior Hodnett got the game within single digits (77-68).
For a stretch of 20-straight minutes (3:00 left in the first half to 3:00 left in the second half), the Buffalos held a multipossession advantage over ENMU. That ended with a fastbreak layup by
Greg Johnson to cut the score within three points at the 3:04 mark. Forty-five seconds later and Johnson drained a three-pointer to tie the game, 80-80.
With 59 seconds remaining,
Jahcoree Ealy gave ENMU its first lead (84-82) since the Greyhounds 2-0 advantage to begin the game.
WT did not let the Greyhounds hold the edge for long as Larry Wise connected for a three-pointer five seconds later.
The two-point loss is now the program's fourth loss by a single score. All four of the contests have included the opposing side with a 10+ point advantage at some point in the game. Today was no different.
Eastern New Mexico shot well from the field connecting on 32-of-55 (58.2%) of their shots. ENMU also drained six three's with only thirteen attempts.
Senior
Greg Johnson had a strong night offensively with 28 points and five assists. Johnson hit a team-best three three-pointers, including the one to tie up the game initially.
Jahcoree Ealy had 16 points and dished out three assists.
Mario Whitley was the only other Eastern player to score in double digits after finishing with ten points and eight rebounds.
One of the biggest notes on tonight's game is that ENMU only attempted 55 shots and WT had 66 shot attempts. A 12-8 edge on offensive rebounds and a similar 12-8 advantage on turnovers led to the Buffs earning more chances to shoot the ball.
ENMU will now shift its attention to a lengthy roadtrip. Eastern will face Texas A&M International January 25 in Laredo and will head to Texas AM-Kingsville January 27. More information can be found on goeasternathletics.com
