Eastern New Mexico men's basketball earns one-point win over Texas A&M-Kingsville

ENMU beats Javelinas on the road, 87-86, Jahcoree Ealy scores 29 points

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball played another game away from Greyhound Arena decided by a singular possession – their sixth this season. This time, the Greyhounds came out on top, 87-86.

"To win on the road against a team who is really good at home is nice," said head coach Brent Owen after the game. "Having the ability to win a close game is important."

ENMU got off to an excellent start and held a 16-point lead (33-17) 11 minutes into the matchup. Eastern earned the advantage after three early baskets from freshman Conrad Luczynski.

"Everyone was moving the ball well inside and out," said Luczynski when asked about the team's success. "We found our mismatches."

The movement was complemented by seven ENMU assists over the opening stretch of play.

The 7-3 big-man helped his team get off to a hot start, but the Javelinas found success from deep range. Coming into Saturday's game, TAMUK was one of the coldest teams from behind-the-arc shooting a 30.2% clip. Instead, the home side heated things up from the three-point arc and caught up to the Greyhounds in a blink of an eye.

By halftime, Eastern New Mexico only held onto a 49-43 advantage.

Texas A&M-Kingsville kept battling with the Greyhounds throughout the second half and finally tied the game at 64 a-piece with ten minutes and some change remaining. From there, the largest lead held by any team would be as many as five points.

One of the major reasons why Eastern New Mexico stayed in the game in the second half was due to Jahcoree Ealy who scored 18 of the team's 38 points in the final period of play.

"It feels good to finally win a close one," remarked Ealy after the victory. "The loss to International (TAMIU) felt bad and I didn't want to feel that way again. We had a chip on our shoulder and it helped us."

TAMUK did hold a lead by two points with eight minutes remaining. Over two-straight offensive possessions for ENMU, sophomore Jose Murillo was fouled and sent to the charity stripe to shoot a pair of free throws.

Over both possessions, Murillo knocked down all four free throws to reverse the script and give his team the lead once again.

The Greyhounds survived a scare with nine seconds remaining with the Javelinas in possession under the basket. TAMUK attempted a game winning shot with the loose ball going off an ENMU player giving the home team one more chance with 0.7 seconds remaining.

From there, the Javelinas got the ball into the hands of their second leading scorer on the afternoon (Allen Singleton). He created space and had an open look for a game winner. This time, it went off the rim and the Greyhounds left Kingsville with a victory.

This is Eastern's first win against Texas A&M-Kingsville away from Greyhound Arena since 2018.

The Lone Star Conference's leading scorer, Ealy, posted 29 points and four steals on 12-of-18 shooting.

Senior Greg Johnson also had an impressive night, including four first half three-pointers. He had 22 points and six assists.

Luczynski provided a difficult challenge with his size in the paint. He had 13 points and eight rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor.

"Nothing better than getting a team win," said Luczynski after the game. "They are a good team. We know what we are capable of and we are going to keep trying to prove that to everyone."

Murillo also finished in double figures scoring. He had ten points and a team-best two blocks.

ENMU won the battle in the paint, 48-26.

The Greyhounds now head into the next week with two difficult home games. Thursday night they host Angelo State and bring in UT Permian Basin Saturday. Both the Rams and Falcons beat the Hounds earlier this season.
