Texas A&M-Kingsville Edges Out Women's Basketball, 62-56

Deja Adrian and Ishuana Hunter combined for 38 points in the loss against the Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball suffered a 62-56 defeat against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday afternoon at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center. The Greyhounds slip to 6-12 on the season with a 2-10 conference record. The Javelinas shift to 8-12 on the season, while holding a 4-9 LSC record.
 
The Greyhounds took the lead in the first few moments of the game, taking a 10-4 lead after back-to-back threes from Ashley Shipley and Jaz Salon. Two baskets from Ishuana Hunter and Salon finished the first frame with ENMU holding a 14-10 lead. However, the Javelinas were dominant to start the second quarter with a 12-0 run over the first 4:27 of the period, 22-14. After the Greyhounds ended the scoring drought, each team traded baskets for the remainder of the half. The Javelinas led by eight going into the locker room, 38-30.
 
Eastern's offense started to click to start the third period, using a 10-4 streak to tie the game at 42-42. Hunter started the scoring with a jumper, then baskets from Salon, Hunter again, Deja Adrian, and Shipley tied the game. From that point, the Greyhounds and Javelinas went back and forth with just two points separating the teams going into the 4th quarter, 48-46. In the final stanza, Texas A&M-Kingsville pulled away with the Greyhounds unable to keep pace. Adrian took over scoring for ENMU in the 4th quarter, scoring seven of the Greyhounds 10 points in the period. The game finished 62-56 TAMUK.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Greyhounds closed the game with a 38.5% field goal percentage (20-52), hitting five three-pointers in the game (5-21, 23.8%), and connecting on 11-14 free throw attempts (78.6%). Texas A&M-Kingsville were efficient, shooting 52.2% from the floor (24-46), 27.8% from the three-point arc (5-18), and logged a 69.2% free throw percentage (9-13).
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville beat the Hounds for rebounds (31-27), while ENMU poked away 10 steals, compared to the Javelinas six steals.

  • Adrian eclipsed 20 points in a single game for the second time this season, with their first being a 27-point performance against Fort Lewis (11/10).
  • On defense, Hunter secured a career best four steals in the game. Both Adrian and Salon set a season high for minutes played, with Adrian playing 39 minutes and Salon playing the whole 40 minutes.
  • Eastern returns to Greyhound Arena on Thursday, Feb. 1, as Angelo State comes to Portales. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
