Women's Basketball Beats The (RV) Lady Buffs, 74-57

ENMU shot 66.7% in the second half, including 6-7 from three.

PORTALES, N.M. – Playing their first Lone Star Conference (LSC) game of the season, Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball (5-1, 1-0 LSC) took down (RV) West Texas A&M (4-2, 0-1 LSC), 74-57, on Saturday afternoon at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
 
Jayla Smith led all scorers with 20 points in the game, while leading the contest with nine rebounds. Smith finished 8-11 from the field, connecting on a trio of three-pointers. Ishuana Hunter provided an important 12 points from the bench along with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Nataya Lockett found a team best five assists in the game, while contributing 11 points and six rebounds. Trinity Hudson supplied eight points on 4-6 shooting, while posting a game high three blocks. Julieta Ceja pulled down eight rebounds, while Tatiana Platonova (8 pts, 2-3 3PTFG) and Jaz Salon (9 pts, 4 asts) played key roles in the victory.  

After falling behind in the first quarter, the Greyhounds outscored the Lady Buffs 62-40 over the final three periods. Trailing by five with five minutes to play in the second period, ENMU flipped the score closing the first half on a 11-2 run to lead 27-23 at halftime. Eastern led by as many as 19 points late in the 4th quarter, while shooting 66.7% from the field in the second half, including 6-7 from three-point range.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The Greyhounds have now beaten the Buffs in each of their last three home games. The 17-point margin of victory is the largest by the Greyhounds since 2003, when ENMU beat WT on home court 76-57 (12/16/03). Both teams played each other for the 100th time in program history.
  • Smith tallied a season high 20 points, while tying a season mark for rebounds with nine. Lockett posted a joint best for assists (5), while Hudson tied a season best for points (8) and a new season high for blocks (3). Ceja also grabbed a season high for boards (8).
  • In the game, the Greyhounds finished shooting 47.6% from the field (30-63), connecting on seven three-pointers (46.7%, 7-15), and making seven of 11 free throws (63.6%). On the other side, West Texas A&M provided a 36.2% field goal percentage (21-58), hitting a quarter of its three-pointers (3-12, 25.0%), and making 12-14 free throw attempts (85.7%).
  • As a team, the Greyhounds had their most efficient three-point shooting night of the season (46.7%, 7-15), along with a season low 13 turnovers.
  • The Greyhounds step out of conference play for its next matchup, welcoming Oklahoma Panhandle State to Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena. The teams meet on Saturday, November 30, with the first tip scheduled for 2 p.m.
