Greyhound men's basketball picks up crucial conference win over Javelinas, 93-83

Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is back in the win column after contest at Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball bounced back from a loss three days ago with a ten-point win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, 93-83.

It didn't feel like a road game according to head coach Daven Võ. He stated that the bench was a major difference maker in today's win.

"Our bench made us feel like we were at home," said Võ after the game. "They were rowdy and made it feel like the Loy."

Even the players commented on their teammates providing extra encouragement.

"Everyone was yelling and cheering us on," said freshman Mo Austin. "It gives you momentum and gives you a sense of confidence."

Austin needed that from his teammates today. He played with confidence and stayed aggressive throughout the matchup.

The Pueblo, Colo. native posted season highs in points (23), field goals (6), free throws (9), and three pointers (2). He got off to a quick start as he scored six of the Greyhounds first eight points.

The freshman said that one of the biggest reasons the team won today was that "our coaches got us ready and prepared to execute." He added that teammates like Cougar Downing and Cooper Jackson prepared him for Wednesday's game by telling him to "be aggressive."

Austin shot 6-of-8 from the floor and executed well down the stretch by making 9-of-10 free throw shots. Austin only turned the ball over once in his 32 minutes of action.

Junior forward Jose Murillo had one his best weeks as a Greyhound. The third-year player followed his 28-point performance against Texas A&M International with a 17-point game today.

"We are really lucky to have him," said Võ when asked about Murillo. "It was just a matter of time. He is one of the best centers in the Lone Star Conference."

The Chihuahua, Mexico native made 5-of-7 shots from the floor and sunk 7-of-12 free throws. He added four rebounds and two blocks.

"I have been more confident," remarked Murillo when asked about the step he took in his game this week.

Immediately, Murillo praised his teammates for the work they have put together.

"We have come more together," said Murillo. "We are ready to take on road trips and be ready to play our best."

As a team, ENMU was strong in the paint scoring 44 points and stayed true to a fast-paced offense with 28 fast break points. They kept control of the game as the lead only changed six times with a majority of that flip-flop taking place in the opening minutes of the first half.

"I feel great. Our guys rallied and are really competitive and care about winning and cared about the game plan," said Võ. "We did what we needed to do to win a road game. We handled a lot of adversity with the changes of game times and travel. We have enough leadership and competitive guys doing what they are willing to do to win."

Four other Greyhounds played double digit minutes and they all scored in double figures.

Treyvon Byrd stepped up in a big way playing a season-high 37 minutes. In the absence of guard Cougar Downing, Byrd provided some spark behind the arc. He hit both of his tries from deep range. The Durham, N.C. native scored 13 points and now has six-straight games with 10+ points. He stayed aggressive on defense pulling down seven rebounds and picking up a steal and a block.

Cooper Jackson made a difference for ENMU as he played a season-high 38 minutes and added 11 points, five assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

Senior Mario Whitley has been one of the most consistent players for Eastern New Mexico. The Saginaw, Mich. native posted ten points and eight rebounds in the victory. He also distributed the ball well with four assists.

Jaden Clarke came off the bench and provided an immediate spark for ENMU. Clarke was a perfect 3-for-3 from deep range and finished with 19 total points. He is one of the team's leading scorers with 12.1 points per game despite only having one start this season. The Bronx, N.Y. native hit 8-of-9 shots from the floor and grabbed six rebounds. Clarke continued to be one of the team's strongest defenders as he consistently forced tipped passes and was a major reason why the Javelinas turned the ball over eight times.

Eastern New Mexico will play their final home game of the calendar year, December 20 at 6 p.m., against Navajo Tech.
