Women's Basketball Cements Best Start in Program History With 56-48 Win Over Texas A&M-Kingsville

The Greyhounds didn't allow a single three-pointer, while holding the Javelinas to just 40.4% from the field

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Women's Basketball (10-1, 5-0 LSC) cemented its best start in program history with a 56-48 road victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-5, 2-3 LSC) at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Starting just their third game of the season, Ishuana Hunter poured in a game high 18 points (8-20 FG), scoring 16 points in the first half. The Senior added to the win with a team high eight rebounds (seven defensive rebounds), along with a team high three steals.

Kaitlyn Edmondson also played a key role in the victory, scoring 11 points (3-4 FG, 5-6 FT) while securing five rebounds. Jaz Salon had six points and four assists in 32 minutes from the bench, while Victoria Barrera, Martrice Brooks, and Jayla Smith each had five points. Trinity Hudson posted five rebounds and a pair of blocks, while Brooks and Abbi Holder both had four boards.

ENMU had two pivotal scoring runs in the game, the first coming to start the second quarter. Hunter began the streak with two layups, while Barrera, Tonka Jakšić, and Edmondson each found a bucket in the 12-3 run over six minutes. Then, the Greyhounds started the final period on a 12-4 run, shifting a five-point lead to a 13-point gap (56-43) over a six minute stretch. Salon, Brooks, and Edmondson all had four points in the scoring sprint.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • With the win, the Greyhounds shift to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play, confirming the best record to begin a season in school history. The previous best mark was 9-1 during the 1987-88 season.
  • The Greyhounds knocked off the Javelinas for the first time since January 2020 (1/25/2020, W 60-45), while holding a 40-34 all-time series lead.
  • Both teams struggled from the floor, with ENMU holding a game high 41.2% from the field (21-51), hitting 50.0% of its threes (5-10), and 69.2% at the foul line (9-13). The Javelinas were held to 40.4% shooting (19-47), missing all 14 three-point attempts, while holding a 10-18 mark at the charity stripe (55.6%).
  • The Greyhounds finished with a 36-27 edge on rebounding, while forcing 12 turnovers, and scoring 19 points from turnovers. Eastern never trailed during the contest, leading for 39 minutes and 38 seconds (tied 0-0 for 22 seconds).
  • Eastern steps out of regular season action, traveling to Las Cruces, New Mexico to face New Mexico State in an exhibition on Friday, December 20. First tip from the Pan America Center is set for 2 p.m.
