Softball Splits Doubleheader With Western New Mexico, Winning Game Two 12-1

Alondra Vasquez hit three home runs over the two games, while Jordan Rivera threw a complete game in the win

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Softball picked up a split with Western New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon at The Yard. During the first game, Western New Mexico scored early and often to win 13-5 (5 Inn.). In the second game, the Greyhounds scored in all but the 1st inning during a 12-1 win over WNMU. With the split of the double header, ENMU shifts to 9-4 on the season with a 2-3 conference record. The Mustangs now stands at 6-6 overall, with a 3-2 LSC standing.

GAME ONE: WNMU 13, ENMU 5 (5 INN.)

Alondra Vasquez started the game with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. After the Mustangs scored four runs in the 1st inning, ENMU tied the game in the 2nd frame. Vasquez drew a bases loaded walk to score a run, then Samantha Gutierrez singled to bring home two runs and tie the game at 4-4. WNMU replied in the bottom of the inning with three runs to go-ahead, 7-4.
 
Following the Mustangs going up 11-4 after the third inning, the home team increased their lead to 13-4 after four innings. Sydney Loyet brought home a run in the fifth inning with an RBI groundout, but the Mustangs closed the game in five innings, 13-5.

NOTABLE STATS

  • The Mustangs outhit ENMU, 15-5 in the game. Five different Greyhounds recording a base hit.
  • Gutierrez, Cecy Jurado, Grace Rofii, Vasquez, and Taighen Whitzel all had hits, while Rofii posted a double.
  • Vasquez and Gutierrez each finished with a pair of RBIs, while Loyet grabbed an RBI.
  • Emma Southerland took their first loss of the season, giving up seven runs from six hits with three strikeouts. Ciara Loken and Maggie Smith also pitched for the Greyhounds, both throwing 1.1 innings.
  • Kamerynn Cordova earned the win by tossing a complete game with five hits allowed, recording five strikeouts.

GAME TWO: ENMU 12, WNMU 1

After a scoreless first inning, a two-out single from Judith Osuna brought in the game's first run. Aylene Lucero scored the run after reaching base on a hit, then stole second base to move into scoring position. Vasquez launched a home run in the 3rd inning, to increase the Hounds advantage. Then, Mikenzey Patterson doubled home a run in the 4th frame (3-0 ENMU).
 
Vasquez hit their second home run of the game to start the 5th inning (3rd of the day) to give ENMU a 4-0 lead. With the bases loaded in the 6th inning, Whitzel brought home a run on a groundout. Then, Lucero drew a bases loaded walk, Rofii brought in a run on a ground out, and Chandler Groves scored on a wild pitch, giving ENMU an 8-0 lead.
 
 
A Western New Mexico solo home run broke up the shutout in the 6th inning, but ENMU put up four runs in the 7th inning to put the game out of reach. An RBI single by Vasquez and a three-run home run from Gutierrez accounted for the runs. ENMU ended the game with a 12-1 win over the Mustangs.
 

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eastern out hit the Mustangs (15-5), posting five extra base hits including three home runs.
  • Vasquez led the Greyhounds in the batter's box, finishing 4-4 at the plate (2B, 2 HR, 4 RBIs, 2R). Lucero, Patterson, Riveria, and Whitzel also had multiple hits, with Gutierrez having three RBIs. Defensively, Xochitl Trejo made six putouts, along with an assist from centerfield.
  • Rivera twirled a complete game for the Greyhounds, allowing five hits with six strikeouts in the win.
  • The Mustangs had three different pitchers enter the game, with Madison Kloepper starting the game and allowing four runs in four innings. Emily Maddux and Kiya Hamar also pitched for the WNMU, allowing four runs each.

"There's nothing like an LSC, in-state rivalry game," said Head ENMU Softball Coach Amanda Fefel. "Both games were offensively driven from both teams. Jordan Rivera pitched a great game keeping the Mustangs off balance at the plate in game two and Xochitl Trejo covered a lot of ground in the outfield," said Fefel. "Tomorrow will be a great rubber match to determine the series, but we need to come out and look to get ahead and stay ahead,".

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • During game one, Loken (1.1 IP) and Smith (1.1 IP) both set season highs for innings pitched.
  • Loyet brought home their first run of the season in game one.
  • During game two, Vasquez had their first multi-homerun game for the Greyhounds. Vasquez also had their first four hit game for ENMU, while tying a career best four RBIs.
  • Riveria tossed a season long 7.0 innings, along with tying their season best for strikeouts with six. The Greyhounds pitcher also accounted for their first hits of the season at the plate.
  • Eastern completes the series tomorrow against the Mustangs, with the single game scheduled for 12 p.m.
