Season-high scoring mark propels Eastern New Mexico men's basketball to win over Oklahoma Christian

Greyhounds men's basketball controls middle portion of game, earns 30+ point victory

PORTALES, N.M. – The buckets were dropping at Greyhound Arena as Eastern New Mexico men's basketball earned a 110-79 win over Oklahoma Christian Thursday night.

"Really impressive performance, especially on the offensive end," said head coach Brent Owen when asked about the victory after the game.

Seven Hounds scored in double figures, including three off the bench.

In just his tenth start for the Green and Silver, junior guard Tre'Von Love made the most of his time on the floor collecting his first double-double for ENMU. Love scored 13 points on three made three-pointers and grabbed a team-best ten rebounds.

"When him (Tre'Von Love) and Greg Johnson made shots in the first half, that is when things opened up," said Owen when asked about some players who made a strong impact tonight. "Tre'Von Love with a double-double is a huge highlight for me."

The St. Louis, Mo. native hit all three of his deep range shots in the first half as part of a rally that saw ENMU outscore OC, 43-15, in the final ten minutes of the first half.

"He's a worker. On and off the court he is getting up shots," said junior Mario Whitley on his teammate's performance. "He was ready for this game and he stepped up in a big way."

Eastern New Mexico didn't start out the game on a high note as they went 2-for-15 at the beginning, however a momentum switch came immediately thanks to players like Johnson and Love. Over that stretch, Love hit three three's, Junior Hodnett made two, Johnson made one, and freshman Conrad Luczynski sank his first career three-pointer.

"Never in my career as a coach," remarked Owen when asked if he had even seen a 7-3 player hit a three-pointer in a game. "He can make them. I've seen him make them in practice."

Well, now the freshman from Illinois holds a perfect 1-for-1 mark from behind the arc. Luczynski finished with ten points, nine rebounds, and three assists.

The Greyhounds only had nine points over the first 9:44 of the game. By the 8:13 mark in the second half, they had scored 90 points. That means, over 21 minutes and 31 seconds the Hounds totaled 81 points while holding the Eagles to just 37 points.

Another student-athlete who made a high-impact for the program was Mario Whitley.

His 11-point, seven rebound performance may look average on paper, however the forward gave the energy needed for the team to win the contest.

"I just try to go get us extra possessions," said Whitley on his performance. "Whatever I can do to help the team win, that's what I am going to do."

The Saginaw, Michigan native added an assist and a block as well for the program.

With the game in strong control for ENMU, that gave the opportunity for Owen to use his bench in key moments down the stretch. Jason Holman tied his career-high with 11 points on three total made three-pointers. The senior last scored in double figures in a win over Navajo Tech back in 2022. Holman now holds 14 made three's as a Greyhound.

Redshirt-sophomore Niko Bossinakis tied his season-best mark with six points. The Colleyville, Texas native sunk two three's and grabbed four defensive rebounds.

One of the biggest advantages ENMU held as a team was outrebounding Oklahoma Christian, 55-35. It marks the first time Eastern has posted 55 or more rebounds in a game since 2016. The Hounds also managed the pace of the game as they scored 41 fast break points. The team came into tonight posting 16.38 per game, which ranks second among LSC foes and fifteenth nationally. After tonight, the team will likely be in the top ten among DII programs.

Greg Johnson led all scorers with 24 points. The senior guard proved to be unselfish with the ball as he created opportunities for OC to foul him in the paint and dished out four assists. Johnson also picked up five rebounds – his most since a win over Angelo State at home. He connected on 10-of-12 shots from the charity stripe.

Third-year Hound Junior Hodnett played 26 minutes off the bench. One of the biggest reasons why he played so much in reserve is because of his effectiveness on both sides. He scored 18 points along with three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Hodnett continues to showcase that he is one of the most dangerous three-point shooters in the Lone Star Conference as he went 3-for-6 tonight.

Lyron Bennett was the seventh player in double figures for ENMU. He totaled ten points with seven rebounds and three assists. Six different Hounds had at least three assists on the evening.

ENMU will now await a Saturday afternoon tip against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Lions are coming off a triple overtime loss to Western New Mexico.
