Softball Completes Sweep Over St. Edward's, 15-5 (5 Inn.)

ALondra Vasquez and Samantha Gutierrez both finished 3-4 with a combined 11 RBIs

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Softball concluded a weekend sweep of St. Edward's on Sunday afternoon, winning the getaway game 15-5 (5 Inn.) at Greyhound Softball Field. ENMU improves to 13-4 on the season, along with a 6-3 conference record. The Hilltoppers slip to 4-15 overall, while posting a 2-7 LSC record.
 
Eastern started the game with a run in the first inning from the first two batters. Mikenzey Patterson led off with a bunt single, then stole second base to move into scoring position. Alondra Vasquez doubled into the gap to score the Greyhounds first run. The Hilltoppers began the second inning with three hits to take the lead, 2-1 SEU.
 
 
After ENMU trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the inning, the Greyhounds scored seven runs in the second to lead 8-2. With the bases loaded and one out, Patterson tied the game with an RBI walk. For the next batter, Vasquez doubled to clear the bases to deep right field to clear the bases and put ENMU ahead 5-2. Two batters later, Samantha Gutierrez hit a home run over the right field fence to plate three more runs and put the Greyhounds ahead 8-2.
 

St. Edward's cut into the Greyhounds lead, scoring three runs with two outs in the top of the 3rd inning. Eastern responded to those three runs from St. Edward's, Vasquez doubling home a run and Gutierrez providing an RBI single., 10-5 ENMU. After an empty 4th inning for St. Edward's, ENMU added five more runs in the 4th inning to put the game out of reach. With two runners on after a Chanler Groves double, two runs scored on a fielding error from the Hilltoppers, then Eastern scored another run from a Hilltoppers throwing error. Gutierrez concluded the Hounds hitting with a 2-run home run (their second of the day), pushing the score to 15-5. A 1-2-3 top of the fifth secured a Greyhounds win (15-5, 5 Inn.).
 

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eastern tallied 12 hits in the game, while the Hilltoppers put seven hits on the scoreboard.
  • The Greyhounds picked up seven extra base hits, while swiping two bases.
  • Gutierrez and Vasquez both finished with three hits, with six RBIs and five RBIs, respectively. Patterson and Taighen Whitzel both finished with a pair of hits, with Patterson scoring four times with two RBIs.
  • Marissa Rodriguez (W, 4-2) earned the win in 2.1 innings of relief with just one hit allowed and three strikeouts. Jordan Rivera started the game for ENMU, going 2.2 innings with five runs allowed with six hits.
  • Kylen Padgett is charged with the loss (L, 2-7), going 1.1 innings with three hits allowed but giving up three hits and six runs. Lisette Urquidez and Makenna Holloway each pitched for St. Edward's, with Urquidez being charged for eight runs from eight hits, while Holloway allowed one run from one hit.

"St. Edward's is always a competitive and well coached team in the conference," said Head ENMU Softball Coach Amanda Fefel. "I'm happy that we were able to pull three games this weekend to get some momentum going into another tough series versus LCU. Alondra Vasquez had a great day at the plate going 3-4 with five RBIs and Samantha Gutierrez going 3-4 with two home runs and six RBIs," said Fefel. "Defensively, we need to clean some things up, but overall, the left side of the field has been coming up with some great plays,".

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Gutierrez set several season marks during the game, supplying their first multi home run game of the season. The Junior had their first three hit game of the season, while registering a career best six RBIs. The six RBIs in a single game is tied for 9th most all-time in a single game.
  • Vasquez posted three doubles in a game for the first time in their career, tying a program record. With the three doubles, Vasquez is the first Greyhound to achieve the feat since 2013, when Alberta Medina had three doubles against Incarnate Word (3/23/13). Additionally, Vasquez had a career best five RBIs in the game.
  • Patterson put up a career best four runs scored, finishing 2-3 in the game with two RBIs. Rodriguez earned their third straight win in the circle.
  • Eastern and St. Edward's played their first conference series in Portales. ENMU winning three games against the Hilltoppers is the first sweep by the Greyhounds.
  • The Greyhounds continue conference play on Tuesday, Feb. 27 when Lubbock Christian comes to Portales for a three-game series. The opening game will be at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, while the teams will play a doubleheader on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
