PORTALES, N.M. – Greyhound Arena proved to be a shooter's gym Thursday night as Eastern New Mexico men's basketball beat Western New Mexico, 125-84, to secure a top-four seed in next week's Lone Star Conference tournament.
ENMU's point total is the second highest in program history. The most points scored by a Greyhound squad came in a 132-109 victory over New Mexico Highlands on December 15, 1979.
"I'm very proud of the way our team played tonight. These seniors deserved to go out with a night like this," said head coach
Brent Owen after the win. "I'm so proud and appreciative of them for what they have brought to our program. They are the reason we have this program on the right track and I believe that they will be remembered at ENMU for many years to come."
The five seniors the program recognized this evening includes
Lyron Bennett,
Jason Holman,
Niko Bossinakis,
Greg Johnson, and
Jahcoree Ealy.
Johnson led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He drilled four three-pointers while dishing out three assists and grabbing three rebounds.
"It means a lot to get this win," said Johnson when asked about the victory. "We are headed in the right direction. We need to turn around and do the same thing Saturday because we are at their crib."
The Hounds final regular season game of 2023-24 has major conference implications as a win and a loss by Lubbock Christian will clinch the three seed for ENMU. A loss or an LCU win will give the Greyhounds the four seed.
Tonight, Eastern New Mexico saw eight student-athletes score in double figures. Joining Johnson was
Jahcoree Ealy (20),
Tre'Von Love (17),
Mario Whitley (13),
Junior Hodnett (11),
Conrad Luczynski (10),
Jose Murillo (10), and
Niko Bossinakis (10).
ENMU shot 15-for-28 (53.6%) from three-point land with six players making at least one from deep range.
Love and Hodnett both finished with three each.
Jason Holman followed in Bossinakis' footsteps with two made from behind the arc. Whitley added one early in the first half. Holman finished with six points, a steal, and an assist.
One of the most impressive stats is that ENMU scored 54 points from the bench.
The program managed to score 61 points in the first half and added 64 points in the final period of action.
Western New Mexico was limited to just 28-of-76 (36.8%) from the floor and 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three-point range. The Mustangs did see some positives from Tanner Vogel who scored 12 points and earned 11 rebounds along with two blocks.
WNMU did hold a 13-11 advantage early in the contest, but the home team managed the half offensively to earn a 24-point edge going into the halftime intermission.
Eastern's 125 points are the most by an LSC team against a fellow Lone Star Conference opponent in 2023-24. However, UT Permian Basin holds the most points this season by a program in the league with a 128-point outing versus Navajo Tech.
Going into the final game of the regular season,
Jahcoree Ealy leads the conference with 21.2 points per game.
Mario Whitley is fifth in the LSC with 7.3 rebounds a contest.
Lyron Bennett is fourth with 4.1 assists per outing.
Jose Murillo swats the fourth most shot attempts with 1.4 per appearance.
