FRISCO, Texas – For the first time since 2003, Eastern New Mexico men's basketball won a postseason game. The 103-84 win over (5) Angelo State puts ENMU in a strong resume building slot for next week's regional tournament.
Eastern New Mexico set the school record for highest field goal percentage as they connected on 39-of-59 (66.1%) shots.
"I knew there was going to be a point in the game where we turned it on," remarked head coach
Brent Owen when asked about the win. "We took off and kept going. We found a way to play on both ends."
ASU played strong over the opening minutes as they held a 22-15 advantage eight minutes into the game.
Eastern New Mexico went on a 9-0 run courtesy of strong play in the paint and continual post-presence creating a three-point opportunity for
Tre'Von Love.
ENMU kept pushing pressure inside the paint as the Rams struggled with foul trouble with the bigs. The Greyhounds held a 48-37 lead at the intermission with
Conrad Luczynski posting 12 of his season-best 14 total points in the opening 20 minutes.
In total, Eastern New Mexico scored 68 points in the paint compared to just 28 for Angelo State.
"This big dude is a problem," said Owen pointing to Luczynski during the postgame press conference. "He just keeps getting better and better. The sky is the limit."
The 7-3 freshman went 6-for-7 from the floor (a season-high in FG's made) and grabbed nine rebounds.
Strong play from the first-year center allowed ENMU's guards to make a difference on both ends of the floor. Senior
Lyron Bennett posted 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting. The Boston, Mass. native found a way to grab eight boards to help the Greyhounds outrebound the Rams, 44-25.
"My teammates told me 'we need you' before the game," said Bennett during the postgame press conference. "I want to thank my teammates for giving me that confidence and for the coaches allowing me to lead the team out there."
In the second half, Eastern extended its lead with strong paint touches from
Jahcoree Ealy and
Greg Johnson. The duo from Arkansas combined for 41 points. First team all-LSC honoree Johnson led the program with 23 points on 9-of-14 from the field. He tied teammate
Mario Whitley with five total assists. The Hounds only missed six shots in the second half (20-of-26).
Ealy helped provide a statement on the result helping ENMU connect on a trio of dunks. It all started with a steal from the senior leading to a fastbreak dunk. Next, came an alley-oop pass from Ealy to Whitley. The sequence finished with Whitley returning the favor and allowing Ealy to slam down another ball into the net. The crowd roaring moment gave ENMU a 98-75 advantage – their largest of the night.
Bench play proved pivotal as Eastern outscored the foe, 34-11. One of the key remarks from ASU's head coach Vinay Patel prior to the game was the lack of depth due to injury for Angelo State. That proved to be a difference as three student-athletes had four or more fouls in the contest.
The 103 points marks the 12th time the Greyhounds have hit the century-mark this season, including ten against Lone Star Conference teams.
ENMU will now look forward to a semifinal matchup with (8) Cameron. The Aggies are coming off a 93-89 (OT) quarterfinal win over (1) West Texas A&M. The team's defense forced the Buffs to shoot just 38.2% from the floor and 25% from three-point land.
Saturday's semifinal will tip at 2:30 p.m. CT at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.
