Serving It Up: Yellow Jacket Classic

The Greyhounds travel to Spearfish, S.D. for weekend tournament at Yellow Jacket Classic

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball heads to the South Dakota for the first time in program history to compete in the Yellow Jacket Classic. The Greyhounds will take on four opponents, hailing from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). First, Eastern faces Sioux Falls (S.D.) on Friday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m., then take on hosts Black Hills State at 2 p.m. To conclude the weekend, the Greyhounds will tangle with Minnesota Crookston on Sat., Sept. 14, at 9:30 a.m. and South Dakota Mines at 3:30 p.m.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • The Greyhounds are still in search of their first win, falling in their opening four matches at the Steel City Showcase.
  • In the opening weekend, Darcy Dodd paced the Greyhounds with 2.69 kills per set, while Sophia Valdez was not far behind with 2.00 k/s.
  • Cayla Reyes led the offense with 4.31 assists per set, while contributing defensively to record a double-double in the season opener with Minnesota Crookston (18 assists, 14 digs).
  • Defensively, Imahni Brown leads the team with 31 digs in 12 sets so far (2.58 d/s), while Dodd is just behind with 2.23 d/s. Valdez (8.0 total blocks) and Teryn Foote (7.0 total blocks) lead the blocking effort for the Greyhounds.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS

  • Sioux Falls holds a 1-3 record after falling in a couple of competitive matches. The Cougars earned a victory over William and Jewell (3-1), while falling in five sets to Washburn.
  • Sadie Voss (3.38 k/s) and Abby Haus (3.00 k/s) have emerged as the hitting leaders for the Cougars. Elise Gillen is the primary setter with 7.38 a/s, while Liz Kopp adds 3.38 a/s.
  • Gillen also leads the Cougars for digs (2.94 d/s), with Faith Van Eck (2.80 d/s) and Voss (2.63 d/s) just behind. Jordan Kuper defends the net with over a block per set, totaling 17 on the season.
  • ENMU and USF will meet for just the second time in program history, with the first meeting coming in 2019 resulting in a 3-0 sweep for the Cougars.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS

  • The Yellow Jackets have gotten off to a flying start, standing 3-1 with a pair of wins over Minot State and one win over Montana State Billings.
  • BHSU are led by outside-hitter Brooke Miller (3.77 k/s), while Abigal Renner adds 2.62 k/s to the attack. Sydnie Tuioti-Mariner runs the offense with 7.62 a/s.
  • Ellie Thomas has picked up 52 digs in the opening matches, leading the team with 4.00 d/s. Randi Wellhoefer has provided 10 total blocks this season (0.77 b/s).
  • Eastern New Mexico will face the Yellow Jackets for the first time in program history.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES

  • The Greyhounds meet Minnesota Crookston for the second time in as many weeks, with UMC taking the first meeting 3-1 over ENMU. The Golden Eagles finished 2-2 after the opening weekend.
  • Maya Jones (3.00 k/s) and Madison Carsten (2.67 k/s) lead the Golden Eagles attack, as Baily Teveldal has set up most of the attack with 8.13 a/s.
  • Libero Kailee Waasdorp finds 4.07 d/s to lead the group, while Emma Malek's 10 total blocks is a team high.
  • After last week's contest, the all-time series sits at 1-1 for the two teams as UMC looks to complete a season sweep of ENMU.

SCOUTING THE HARDROCKERS

  • South Dakota Mines hold a 1-3 standing after its first week of the season, grabbing a five-set win over Alaska Anchorage.
  • The Hardrockers are led by Alessandra Meoni (3.60 k/s) and Jenna Curtis (3.08 k/s), while Kiley Metzger and Ellison Spencer share the setting responsibilities. Metzger leads the team with 5.73 a/s, while Spencer is just behind with 4.55 a/s.
  • Hannah Benes stands as the team leader with 4.87 d/s, while Kiera Walsh and Annelise Larson both have 10 total blocks this season.
  • Eastern New Mexico will face the Hardrockers for the first time in program history.
