ENMU men's basketball drops home matchup to Sul Ross State

Greyhound men's basketball loses high scoring game in Portales

PORTALES, N.M.- Eastern New Mexico dropped a home contest to Sul Ross State, 110-101, Thursday night at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.

SRSU was led by a school record, 44 points, from Ethan Yancy. He proved to be nearly unstoppable on a night when the Lobos guard connected on 60% of his shots from the floor.

"Sul Ross came out ready to go," said head coach Daven Võ after the contest. "Credit to them. They wanted it more than we did."

Both squads had five players reach double figures scoring and both teams shot the ball at an extremely high clip.

ENMU sunk 37-of-64 (58%) shots tonight with Jose Murillo leading the way with 26 points. Murillo struggled from the charity stripe at times but still managed to go 8-of-12 on free throws.

Senior Mario Whitley had another double double. He finished the night with 21 points and 12 rebounds. However, he was one of three Greyhounds to commit three turnovers in the game.

Eastern New Mexico continued to play strong in the paint and in transition. ENMU posted 62 points in the paint and had 31 points in fastbreak situations.

One player who provided a late spark for Eastern was Jaden Clarke. The first year Greyhound hit two three pointers in the closing minutes to keep the program in eyesight of the deficit, but the key shots came just too late for ENMU to earn the win. Clarke finished with 17 points and four rebounds.

Hitting shots behind the arc proved to be the difference maker, especially in the opening half of the game. Over the first 20 minutes, SRSU sunk eight three point baskets, while ENMU did not hit a single one from deep range. The Greyhounds trailed by eight points at the halftime intermission.

Eastern New Mexico totaled nine steals as a team. Mo Austin and Clarke each had a pair in the contest. The Greyhounds found success going to Austin late in the game as he closed the contest with 12 points by making all final six shot attempts. He dished out an impressive six assists.

The loss pits ENMU to 10-6 (5-5 LSC). Next up for the Hounds is an in-state battle with Western New Mexico. The matchup on January 18 is set for 3 p.m. at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
