ELLENSBURG, Wash. – No. 16 Central Washington proved why they are one of the best teams in the nation as they earned a 58-7 win over Eastern New Mexico.
"We started slow and made mistakes early. They did a good job on capitalizing on those," said head coach
Kelley Lee after the game. "They are a really good team, and we didn't play well."
More than 5000 fans witnessed the Lone Star Conference matchup Saturday night.
Central Washington got off to an excellent start as they forced an early three-and-out, which led to a touchdown on CWU's first play of the game. CWU would continue to stay strong defensively as they added two more touchdowns to take a 21-0 lead and held the Greyhounds to just one first down in the period.
The second quarter continued to build in favor of CWU as a flurry of short drives and costly Eastern turnovers carried the team to a 52-0 lead going into halftime intermission.
Trailing 55-0 in the middle of the third quarter, Eastern New Mexico had one of the best highlights of the night as
Dillon Hein forced a fumble on a punt return and helped get ENMU in favorable field position. A late penalty on the ensuing drive halted Eastern's attempt to score, but the possession showed the best offensive movement of the night.
Eastern continued to establish longer drives in the fourth quarter. On their final possession, the Hounds found the end zone for the first time on a one-yard rush from quarterback
Jarius Stewart.
ENMU's 187 total rushing yards are the most by a DII program against CWU this season. Stewart guided the attack on the ground with 64 yards on 13 carries. A majority of those yards came on the final drive of the contest.
Demarion Finch added 35 rushing yards.
Defensively,
Aaron Warren provided some support for ENMU with 12 tackles, including one for loss.
Central Washington played well in all facets of the game. Three different Wildcats totaled nine tackles in the contest. Quarterback Kennedy McGill helped the team offensively with 132 passing and 67 rushing yards. He had two touchdowns through the air and two from the ground. One of the most productive pass catchers for CWU was Mason Juergens who hauled in three receptions for 36 yards and a score.
Eastern New Mexico will now set their attention towards Western Oregon who comes to Portales, N.M. on October 11 for the Hall of Honors Game. Kick is set for 3 p.m. at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium.
