Greyhound men's basketball continues strong start to season with win

Eastern New Mexico defeats Northwestern Oklahoma State, 83-63, on the road

ALVA, Okla. – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is on a roll after an 83-63 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon.

"We did what we needed to do to come out with a road win," said head coach Daven Võ after a big road win for the Greyhounds. "We had good leadership out there from the guys."

For the first time in four seasons, ENMU men's basketball played without Jose Murillo on the floor. The 6-9 big man was inactive for today's contest with an injury and is expected to be back for next week's games in Pueblo, Colo.

"He's so dominate for us. We have never played without Jose (Murillo) on the floor," said Võ when asked about the senior forward. "We feel good with our group in Mika Tangermann and Modibo Sanogo. There was no drop off and we followed the same game plan."

Tangermann earned the start and responded well. He finished with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and added four rebounds.

Eastern New Mexico dominated the battle on the glass. Eastern New Mexico outrebounded the home side, 38-20. They also won the offensive rebounding battle, 18-5. That turned into 20 second chance points for the Greyhounds.

Mo Austin was the most impressive player on the court. The sophomore point guard played 35 minutes and scored 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting. Most of his production came off driving layups and he made the most of attacking the Rangers with speed and athleticism.

"Mo (Austin) is just a force," responded Võ when asked about his speedy guard. "He maximizes everything and chooses to do that every single day."

Austin also picked up three steals and two assists. He helped the Greyhounds earn their third straight win.

Also scoring in double figures was the defensive menace Cooper Jackson. Jackson had 11 points, five assists, five rebounds, and four steals. He did not shoot the ball particularly well, but managed to be a key reason why NWOSU had 16 total turnovers.

One key aspect to the game is that 10 Greyhounds scored in the game. Võ chose to rely on the play of redshirt sophomore Alex Alfaro in the opening period of play. Alfaro helped create a spark for the Greyhounds that settled them on both sides of the floor. The Deming, N.M. native scored six points and picked up two rebounds in the win.

Northwestern Oklahoma State came into the contest as one of the better programs in playing down low and working through their bigs. ENMU's Treyvon Byrd was a vital reason why NWOSU struggled to keep up with the Hounds quick tempo. Byrd finished with eight points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

Eastern New Mexico improves to 3-1 in nonconference play and will continue the season with two games at the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by CSU Pueblo. They will face MSU Denver on Friday and CSU Pueblo on Saturday.
