PUEBLO, Colo. – Eastern New Mexico is on a five-game winning streak after a perfect weekend at the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Colorado State University, Pueblo. The Greyhounds spoiled the Thunderwolves perfect 5-0 record to start the season with an impressive 70-63 win on Saturday night.
"We beat a good CSU Pueblo team," said head coach Daven Võ after the gritty win. "I am thankful to come out of here with two victories and 15 healthy bodies."
It was a full-on Greyhound weekend with ENMU leading the whole time in both games they played.
Eastern New Mexico never gave up the lead as they grew their advantage by as many as 14 points (27-13) late in the first half.
For a second-straight game, senior forward
Jose Murillo dominated on both ends of the floor. Murillo had a much-needed 21 points and 15 rebounds in the win that saw ENMU win the rebounding battle by a small margin.
"Lucky to have a guy like that," said Võ when asked about Murillo. "He is just incredible and does not complain about getting fouled. He is gritty, hardworking, and is about all the right things."
CSU Pueblo was winning the rebounding battle for most of the night, but Eastern squeaked away with the 40-37 edge.
Treyvon Byrd and
Austin Abrams had five rebounds apiece in the win.
Eastern New Mexico forced the hosts to shoot poorly from the field. The Thunderwolves only made 19-of-59 (32.2%) from the floor. The Greyhounds went 25-for-56 from the floor (44.6%).
Speed helped the Hounds control the pace of the game. Eastern tacked on seven steals forcing 10 CSU Pueblo turnovers.
Mo Austin finished with a game-high four steals, while
Cooper Jackson added two. ENMU earned 20 fastbreak points compared to just three for the opposition.
For a second consecutive night, Eastern New Mexico controlled the game in the paint. The Hounds scored 38 points compared to 22 for CSU Pueblo.
This weekend was extra special for sophomore guard
Mo Austin as he was playing in front of a "home court advantage" crowd. The Pueblo native scored 18 points and picked up four rebounds, four steals, and four assists. He got to the charity stripe with ease and went 8-for-10 at the line.
Cooper Jackson controlled the game with his aggressive playing style but also found rhythm early on the offensive end. Jackson made three three-pointers in the opening period of play. He finished with 15 points and dished out three assists.
Eastern New Mexico improves to 5-1 on the season and will now set their eyes on the opening weekend of conference play. The Greyhounds will host Cameron (Dec. 4) and Oklahoma Christian (Dec. 6) at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.
