RICHARDSON, Texas – In the first meeting between UT Dallas and Eastern New Mexico men's basketball, the Greyhounds took care of business over the tough, upset-minded Comets with a 90-83 win.
"They are a very well coached team and play extremely hard," said head coach Daven Võ after the program's eighth-straight win. "UTD was ready to compete against us. We found a way to win and figure out the puzzle."
Eastern New Mexico matches their longest win streak since 2023-24. Another win will match the team's nine game win streak set in 2002-03.
Four different Greyhounds scored in double figures in the seven-point victory.
Cooper Jackson led the way offensively with career highs with 22 points and eight assists.
"Our coaches emphasize toughness and that is what we want our identity to be," said senior guard
Cooper Jackson when asked about the program's performance tonight. "At the end of the day, my teammates and coaches are the reason why I play so hard and try my best for them."
Despite a career night, Jackson spent most of the postgame interview complimenting his teammates' play and sharing the support he gets from the Greyhound coaching staff.
Jose Murillo continues to pile on double-doubles. His fifth of the season came after 16 points and 10 rebounds. The story of the night for Murillo came in the opening three minutes as he went to go for a defensive stop. He was elbowed in the face and ended up playing the rest of the game with a busted lip.
For a third straight game,
Treyvon Byrd scored in double figures. His 12 points were aided by five rebounds and two steals. The senior forward also led the team at the charity stripe as he connected on all four of his attempts from the line.
Lastly,
Austin Abrams earned 11 points in the win. He was consistent at finishing baskets in the paint despite only playing for 19 minutes.
One major notable stat is that Eastern New Mexico connected on 36-of-61 (59%) from the field. The Greyhounds have shot better than 50% in three straight contests and now rank in the top 20 in the nation in field goal shooting percentage.
ENMU's coaching staff was also pleased with the team's play off the bench. The reserves combined for 20 points, but the main talking point was how the team responded to first half foul trouble from the starting guards.
Mika Tangermann and
Kobe Smith both had six points on the night. Smith had made just three shots from behind the arc entering tonight and he sunk 2-for-3 in the win over the Comets.
Elijah Hollins also played key minutes for ENMU with 21 minutes while connecting for four points, a steal, and a rebound.
Eastern New Mexico is one of five programs in the Lone Star Conference undefeated in league play. ENMU will take a short break from conference action to face Western Oregon (Dec. 19) and Westminster (Utah) (Dec. 20) in a pair of nonconference games in Salt Lake City, Utah. They will go back to LSC contests on Jan. 2 with a matchup on the road against Sul Ross State.
