PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (6-7) ended a five-game losing skid, while snapping a five-game winning run from New Mexico Highlands (7-7), following a 15-7 win over the Cowboys on Saturday evening at Greyhound Baseball Field.
The Greyhounds scored 15 runs in the game, behind 10 runs in the first two innings. Eastern were aggressive on the bases, stealing ten bags over the nine innings with none caught stealing. The team combined for 15 hits and eight walks, led by
Daniel Pruitt's 3-5 day at the plate with five RBIs.
Luciano Terilli also collected three hits, while three other Greyhounds had multiple hits.
On the mound,
Nick Mooney navigated a rough first inning to finish six innings of work during the game giving up four runs.
Logan Kinter,
Reno Morehouse, and
Chase Rozell all pitched one inning during the game, with Rozell recording three strikeouts in the 9
th inning.
After NMHU put up four runs to begin the game, the Greyhounds picked up six runs in the 1
st and four runs in the 2
nd to take a 10-4 lead after two innings. After loading the bases in the first three batters,
Kyle Kiernan produced a 2-RBI single to get Eastern on the scoreboard.
Demetrio Archuleta followed with a RBI single, then Pruitt gave Eastern the lead with a 3-run home run to push the score to 6-4. In the next inning,
Jalen Freeman brought home two runs with a bases load single, then a sacrifice fly, and double from Pruitt put ENMU ahead 10-4.
New Mexico Highlands kept Eastern off the scoreboard in the 3
rd inning, but ENMU scored runs in the 4
th, 5
th, and 6
th frames. Pruitt recorded his third hit with an RBI single in the third, while the Greyhounds scored two runs from a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch in the 5
th.
Willie Ponce recorded an RBI double in the 6
th to give ENMU a 14-4 advantage. The Cowboys extended the game in the 7
th inning with three runs, but the Greyhounds supplied one more run in the bottom of the inning to keep their 15-7 advantage.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Eastern finished with 15 hits compared to the Cowboys 11, while ENMU took advantage of eight walks and seven hit by pitches.
- Freeman led all the Greyhound base runners in stolen bases with three, while Tucker Gideon, Ponce, and Terilli each had two stolen bases.
- Mooney claims the win for the Greyhounds on the hill, moving to 3-0, while Reno Morehouse made his first appearance for Eastern out of the bullpen. Dominick Castillo is given the loss for the Cowboys, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits in four innings.
- Pruitt tallied a season-high three hits and five RBIs, extending his hitting streak to four straight games. Freeman's three stolen bases are a single game high this season by a Greyhound, while 10 stolen bases for the team is tied as the 8th most in a single game. ENMU's seven hit by pitches is the most in a single game in program history.
- Eastern wraps up the series tomorrow against the Cowboys, facing NMHU in a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 23.
