Softball Takes Opening Game, 6-3; Falls In Extra Innings Against St. Edward's, 4-3 (9 Inn.)

Miranda Guillen tossed a complete game in the win, while Emily Marsh finished with four RBIs

AUSTIN, Texas – Eastern New Mexico split its final road series of the weekend with St. Edward's on Monday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field. In the first game, ENMU scored three runs in two different innings to beat the Hilltoppers, 6-3. In the second game, the Greyhounds scored two runs in the 7th inning to extend the game, but St. Edward's won on a walk-off home run, 4-3 (9 Inn.).

GAME ONE: ENMU 6, SEU 3

After getting runners into scoring position each of the first two innings, the Greyhounds opened the scoring in the third frame. Alondra Vasquez singled to get the first base runner on, then Grace Rofii walked with two outs to bring up Emily Marsh. The Greyhound shortstop hit a towering home run to left field to give ENMU a 3-0 advantage. Eastern's defense held the Hilltoppers in check over the next two innings, as ENMU maintained its lead going into the 5th.
 

Eastern doubled its lead in the 5th inning, scoring three runs to take a 6-0 lead. With runners on first and second with no outs, Rofii laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached on a throwing error sending a run to the plate. Marsh supplied an RBI single later in the inning, and Madison Begaye brought home a run with a bases loaded walk. The Hilltoppers did respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, and had a sacrifice fly in the 7th inning, but Eastern claimed the opening game, 6-3.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Eastern finished with seven hits during the contest, coming off the bats of six different Greyhounds. Both Marsh and Vasquez scored twice, while the former had four RBIs in the game.
  • Miranda Guillen delivered a complete game performance in the circle, as the first year allowed just four singles and struck out eight hitters.
  • For St. Edward's, Haley Carmona took the loss, allowing four runs in four innings, while Makenna Holloway pitched three innings of relief, giving up a pair of runs.
  • Marsh picked up a career high four RBIs in a single game, while producing their second career home run.
  • The Greyhounds earned just their second win all-time against the Hilltoppers in Austin.

GAME TWO: SEU 4, ENMU 3 (9 Inn.)

Both teams registered a run in the second inning to start the scoring. Marsh reached base on a walk, then Rofii followed with a reach on error to get a runner in scoring position. Begaye stepped in a lined a single over the shortstops head to get ENMU on the board, 1-0. SEU played small ball to get their run in the second, with a walk, sacrifice bunt, ground out, and single doing the job. Both teams were held in check until the 5th inning, as the Hilltoppers supplied two runs in the inning to take a 3-1 advantage.

Eastern answered the call for late runs in the top of the seventh to extend the game. Aylene Lucero singled, then Valeria Contreras reached base on an error to represent the tying run. Christina Meneses launched a triple into the right center gap to tie the contest at 3-3. St. Edward's prevented the leading run to come in, as the game entered extra innings. Both teams played strong defense in the 8th inning, with a diving catch for the Hilltoppers in the top of the inning, and a over the shoulder catch in the outfield from Meilana Lopez prevented a walkoff double. ENMU loaded the bases in the 9th with no outs, but St. Edward's got out of the jam. SEU ended the game with a solo home run in the 9th to take a 4-3 win over Eastern.
 

NOTABLE STATS

  • The home Hilltoppers out hit Eastern, 8-6, during the game. Meneses had the lone extra base hit for ENMU, while the team laid down four sacrifice hits. Meneses had two hits and two RBIs, leading the team in both categories.
  • Jordan Rivera pitched four innings of relief in a loss, allowing a pair of hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Marissa Rodriguez gets a no-decision, throwing 4.1 innings with six hits given up and three runs (one earned).
  • Lisette Urquidez tossed nine innings in the win for SEU, recording five walks and five strikeouts.
  • The Greyhounds and Hilltoppers played their third extra inning game in Austin in the last five meetings, as St. Edward's prevailed in all three.
Eastern returns home for their next LSC series, facing Cameron on Friday, February 28. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
