Greyhound men's basketball earns 20-point home win over Angelo State

Eastern New Mexico shoots ball well, takes down ASU 82-62

PORTALES, N.M. – For a second time this season, Eastern New Mexico men's basketball pulled off a win over Angelo State. This time the 82-62 victory came in the confines of Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena as ASU gave up 80+ points for just the fourth time this season.

"It felt great to have a bunch of people in the arena," said head coach Daven Võ when asked about playing at home for the first time in three weeks. "I feel like we missed the arena, but I feel like people missed us even more."

Greyhound fans were treated to quite the show as ENMU shot 59.2% from the floor.

Jose Murillo played a team-high 36:50 and made the most of it on the stat sheet. Murillo had a game-high 21 points on 7-of-7 shooting. It is Murillo's third game this season making every single one of his shots from the floor. One area Võ praised the big-man's efforts was through his ability to respond from extra defensive pressure.

"He played really well today," said Võ when asked about the Chihuahua, Mexico native. "He played better against the double-team."

Everytime Murillo got the ball down low, he was immediately pressured from Angelo State defenders forcing him to make a decision – pass or take the shot. He ended up committing four of the Hounds 14 total turnovers, but Võ expressed pleasure in the junior forward's four assists and several "hockey assists" on the night.

Senior Cougar Downing shined for ENMU tonight.

"Cougar Downing shot the heck out of the basketball," said Võ when asked about the Kansas native." Our team played good defense today and it helps when on the other side we have a guy hitting a bunch of shots."

Võ was referring to Downing as someone who gave the Hounds plenty of energy offensively tonight. Thursday marked the third contest where the ENMU guard has connected on six three's this season. Downing also finished with two rebounds and a steal.

Also scoring in double figures for Eastern was Lawrence, Kan. native, Cooper Jackson. He had ten points on 4-of-5 shooting along with three steals. Jackson ranks third in the conference with 48 total steals.

ENMU only gave up the lead once in the entire game. ASU's only advantage saw the Rams hold a 12-11 edge with 13:58 remaining in the opening half. An 11-0 run from Eastern New Mexico would keep the game around the double-digit mark for the remainder of the period.

The Hounds dominated the second half as they outscored the Rams, 36-19, over the first 12 minutes to take their largest lead of the matchup (73-44).

Eastern continued to be a force in the paint as they scored 38 points from short range. They also ran well with the ball putting up 13 points in fast break situations.

ENMU limited ASU to shoot just 21-of-51 (41.2%) from the floor. The Rams would finish the night with ten made three pointers as Kaden Evans connected on a season-high seven of those deep shots.

Passing the ball was key for the winning side. Eastern had 16 assists with Mario Whitley, Jose Murillo, and Mo Austin each having four total assists.

One of ENMU's strengths this season is winning the rebounding battle. Tonight, they allowed just 22 total rebounds to ASU. That marks the lowest total by a DII foe against the Hounds this season.

Eastern New Mexico will prepare for the next game as part of the weekend homestand. ENMU will host UT Permian Basin for a 3 p.m. tip Saturday afternoon at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena. The Falcons currently sit two games ahead of ENMU in conference standings.
