DENTON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico Softball (16-10, 9-7 LSC) ended its Texas road trip with a pair of victories against Texas Woman's (12-10, 8-8) on Monday afternoon at Dianne Baker Field. In the opening game, ENMU shut out the Pioneers, 6-0, while Eastern scored late runs during a 6-1 win in game two.
GAME ONE: ENMU 6, TWU 0
Miranda Guillen dictated the game from start to finish with a complete game 13 strikeout performance in the circle. After Eastern scored a run in the opening inning, the first-year pitcher took care of the rest, starting with three strikeouts in the 1
st inning. Guillen allowed just three base runners in the game, with one single, walk, and hit by pitch. The El Paso, Texas native retired the final 11 batters in a row, recording two strikeouts in five of the seven innings.
Offensively, the Greyhounds scored in the first inning from a
Christina Meneses groundout, then extended their lead with three runs in the 6
th inning. With runners on second and third with one out,
Alexa Ayala stepped in to pinch hit and doubled to left center to score a pair of runs. Later in the inning, ENMU scored a run with a double steal, with
Samyrah Sanders coming home. ENMU added a pair of insurance runs in the 7
th inning, bringing home a pair of runs on two Texas Woman's errors.
NOTABLE STATS
- The Greyhounds out hit the Pioneers, 7-1, with Ayala providing the only extra base hit of the game. Aylene Lucero finished 2-4 in the game, scoring twice, while Ayala paced Eastern with two RBIs.
- Guillen moves to 5-3 this season, totaling 13 strikeouts and allowing just three base runners. Guillen tossed their second shutout of the season, and team leading 5th complete game.
- Allison Gonzalez started the game for the Pioneers, pitching six innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. Janyssa Ramos recorded the final three outs, facing four batters.
- Guillen's 13 strikeout performance is a career high and the 6th most strikeouts in a single game by a Greyhound. Guillen's 13 K's (11 swinging and 2 looking) are the most since Brook Leger struck out 18 against Fort Lewis (2/11/22).
- Around the conference, 13 strikeouts are the 2nd most in a single game this season, with four performances of 14 strikeouts.
- Eastern recorded their first road shutout against the Pioneers since 2005 (3/19/05).
GAME TWO: ENMU 6, TWU 1
Texas Woman's got on the board in the second inning, scoring a run on a groundout after Pioneer reached base on an error and stole second base. However, ENMU responded in the next half inning with a run, scoring from an infield groundout.
Valeria Contreras led off with a walk, then advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches.
Alondra Vasquez brought in the run on a ground out to second base.
The game pivoted in the bottom of 5
th inning with the score still at 1-1. With runners on second and third with no outs for Texas Woman's, Eastern turned a 9-3-6-2 triple play to escape the jam. Lucero fielded a line out in right field, then relaid the ball into the infield with the runner on second base caught between second and third. Contreras tracked down the runner in a pickle for the second out, then threw out the runner at third base trying to advance home. The next half inning, Eastern plated five runs to go ahead 6-1. With the bases loaded and two outs, Contreras reached on an infield single to give ENMU the lead. Vasquez followed with a hard single up the middle (scoring two), then Meneses drove in two runs with a double to right center.
NOTABLE STATS
- Eastern supplied nine hits during the game, while TWU were held to just three hits. Three different Greyhounds provided a double, while drawing five walks.
- Vasquez led the Greyhounds going 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs, with Rofii also supplying a pair of hits. Meneses brought in two runs with one hit, while Contreras led ENMU with two runs scored.
- Marissa Rodriguez tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run (unearned). Rodriguez surrendered just three singles and no walks, posting four 1-2-3 innings.
- Starter Emily Janek went 0.1 inning, allowing two walks and a hit. Ramos came in for relief, allowing three hits and two runs in a loss over 4.2 innings. Gonzalez tossed the final two innings, surrendering five hits, four runs, and two walks.
- The Greyhounds turned the first triple play in program history, doing so in nearly 30 years of the program's existence.
- Eastern earned a road sweep over the Pioneers for the first time since 2021.
