PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (15-12, 13-12 LSC) powered five home runs during a high scoring game with Sul Ross State (2-27, 2-27 LSC), winning 17-12 on Friday afternoon at Kokernot Field.
Despite getting out hit, 13-12, the Greyhounds came away with a 17-12 win, hitting five home runs and taking advantage of 11 walks. Six different Greyhounds finished with multiple hits, as
Daniel Pruitt and
Luciano Terilli each homered twice in the game.
Jalen Freeman supplied a double and a home run, while
Adrien Martin drew three walks. Pruitt picked up six RBIs during the game, while Terilli finished with four, and
Demetrio Archuleta had three RBIs.
Four pitchers took the mound, as
Demitrius DiMatteo earned the win in 1.2 scoreless relief innings.
Roman Connolly started the game, allowing four runs on eight hits, while
Jadon Rendon (1.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R) and
Marc Rios (2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R) finished the game on the mound for Eastern.
After the Lobos took the lead in the first inning with a run, the Greyhounds put up four runs in the 2
nd frame. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Kyle Kiernan drew a run home with a walk, then Archuleta cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double down the left field line. However, a pair of home runs for Sul Ross State (solo HR in 3
rd, 2-run HR in 4
th) tied the game at 4-4.
From then, ENMU's offense connected in the 4
th inning with 10 runs in the single frame, hitting three home runs. After a leadoff walk, Pruitt restored the ENMU lead with a 2-run home run to deep left field.
Jalen Freeman followed Pruitt, homering to left field to continue the long ball trend for the Greyhounds. Next, two walks and a passed ball put two runners in scoring position, with a ground out, then a single putting ENMU ahead 9-4.
Dylan Shea joined the hitting parade with a bases loaded single to score one run, then Pruitt followed with a grand slam to dead-center to give the Greyhounds a 14-4 lead. ENMU brought home 10 runs in the inning on six hits with four walks and three home runs.
The scoring slowed down for a bit, as Sul Ross State plated two runs in the bottom of the 6
th to start a mini rally. The Lobos supplied three runs in the 7
th, with Sul Ross State now trailing 14-9 going into the top of the 8
th. However, Terilli hit a solo homer in the 8
th, and a two-run home run in the 9
th to give ENMU a few insurance runs, as the Greyhounds claimed the series opener, 17-12.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Pruitt had a career-high six RBIs in the game, while having their first multi-home run game of the season. Terilli posted their second career multi-home run game, achieving the feat earlier in the season against Cameron (2/28/25).
- Offensively, the Greyhounds set season highs for runs scored (17), RBIs (17), and home runs (5).
- Five home runs in a single game are the most by the Greyhounds since ENMU launched five against Lubbock Christian last season (4/27/24) and is the 3rd most in a single game in program history.
- Pruitt tallied his 10th and 11th career home runs for the Green and Silver, while Terilli posted his team leading 6th and 7th home runs, with Freeman hitting his first long ball as a Greyhound.
- ENMU faced the Lobos for the first time since 2007.
- Eastern New Mexico returns to Kokernot Field tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, March 22, to face the Lobos in a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. (MST).
