PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (22-12, 20-12 LSC) moved their winning streak to eight straight games following a 28-6 (7 Inn.) win over Oklahoma Christian (7-26, 6-26 LSC) on Sunday afternoon at Greyhound Baseball Field. The win secured a series sweep of the Eagles, with Sunday's win being the largest margin of victory over the weekend.
ENMU scored 28 runs in the game, doing so on 15 hits (seven extra-base hits), 10 walks, six hit-by-pitches, and four errors.
Luciano Terilli had a team high four hits, with 10 different Greyhounds finding a hit.
Beau Preston and
Anthony Cortese each had a grand slam home run, with Cortese finishing with a team high seven RBIs.
Willie Ponce,
Adrien Martin, and Cortese each scored four times, with Martin drawing a team high three walks.
Chase Rozell got the start on the hill for ENMU, allowing a pair of runs on two hits and five walks.
Klevert Martina was the first relief pitcher, earning the victory in two innings, surrendering five hits and two runs with three strikeouts.
Reno Morehouse tossed the final frame, allowing two runs.
The Greyhounds blew open the game with 15 runs in the 2
nd inning to take a 15-0 lead. Eastern scored the runs on eight hits, with four walks, and three hit-by-pitches. Highlights of the inning included a 2-RBI single from Terilli, a 2-RBI double from
Jalen Freeman, and a 2-RBI double from
Demetrio Archuleta. Every batter in the lineup batted twice in the inning, each recording one scored run at a minimum.
Each team picked up two runs in the 3
rd inning, while ENMU grabbed a run in the 4
th, and OC scored two runs in the 5
th, with ENMU leading 18-4 after five innings. From then, the Greyhounds piled on 10 more runs in the 6
th inning, with seven hits in the frame, hitting three home runs. Preston homered to left field with the bases loaded to make the game, 23-4,
Dominick Cassell followed with a solo homer, then Cortese hit grand slam to cap the ENMU scoring at 28. OC scored a pair of consolation runs in the 7
th, as the Greyhounds took the game 28-6 over the Eagles.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Cortese put up a career best seven RBIs, the 5th most in a single game in program history. Cortese, Martin, and Ponce each tied a career best for runs scored with four. Terilli provided his first four-hit game of the season.
- Preston and Cassell each hit their first home runs of the season, while Cortese launched his second homer of the weekend, and fifth of the season.
- The Greyhounds topped the team high for runs scored in a game with 28, while 25 RBIs is the second most in a game this season. The 28 runs is tied for the second most in program history, while 22 runs is the 2nd largest margin of victory in program history, only behind the Greyhounds 23-0 win against Lane in 2017 (2/3/17)
- Winning by 22 runs is the largest margin of victory for the Greyhounds against the Eagles, while 28 runs is the most by either team in the all-time series. ENMU has now won 11 of the last 12 games against the Eagles, including eight consecutive games at home versus OC.
- Eastern New Mexico looks to continue its hot hitting on the road next weekend, traveling to San Antonio for a four-game series against St. Mary's. The first game of the series is on Friday, April 4, beginning at 5 p.m. (MST) / 6 p.m. (CST) against the Rattlers.
