PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball (25-14, 23-14 LSC) took the opening game of the series in walk-off fashion against Lubbock Christian (23-16, 22-15 LSC), winning 6-5 in 11 innings on Friday evening at Greyhound Baseball Field.
Despite being out hit in the game, 10-7, the Greyhounds pushed across the six runs, taking advantage of 12 walks.
Anthony Cortese and
Willie Ponce finished with two hits, as Cortese brought in three RBIs.
Luciano Terilli drew four walks and had the game winning single in the 11
th.
On the mound,
Adrian Rubio delivered six shutout relief innings to get the win. The right-hander struck out five batters with just two hits and two walks given up.
Demitrius DiMatteo began the game for the Greyhounds, tossing five innings on the hill allowing five runs from eight hits and a walk.
Lubbock Christian scored the game's opening runs, picking up a run in the 2
nd and 3
rd inning, but Eastern quickly replied with two runs in the 4
th inning. After Terilli walked, Cortese singled to put runners on the corners.
Adrien Martin brought home Terilli from third with a single.
Jalen Freeman singled just after Martin, sending Cortese to the plate to tie the game at 2-2. In the following inning, ENMU took its first lead of the day with Cortese clearing the bases with a 3-RBI double. A single from
Willie Ponce, and walks from
Demetrio Archuleta and Terilli loaded the bases, allowing Cortese to double down the left field line to plate three runs.
However, Lubbock Christian quickly responded with three runs in the next half inning to tie the game. A pair of hits scored the first run, then a single and ground out brought home two runs to tie the game at 5-5. From then on, hits were tough to come by for both teams, with the Greyhounds loading the bases in the 10
th inning with one out. LCU extended the game with a 4-6-3 double play to send the teams to the 11
th.
In the bottom of the 11
th, ENMU began the inning with back-to-back walks, then a fielder's choice and flyout put the winning run just 90 feet away. Archuleta drew a walk to load the bases, bringing Terilli to the plate. Terilli hit a ball to the opposite field, which evaded the left fielder's diving effort to end the game 6-5 in favor of the Greyhounds.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Rubio collects his sixth win of the season, with all the victories coming out of the bullpen. The six innings is his longest this season, while taking his strikeout total to 43 on the season to lead the Hounds.
- The eleven innings between the teams is the longest game since the teams went 12 innings in 2000 (2/11/00). The Chaps won the game 8-7 in 12 innings in Portales, being the opening game of a two-game series between the teams.
- Four walks from Terilli are a joint career high, bringing his season total to 36 walks on the season. The 36 walks tie a single-season high he had last season, while being the 5th most in a single campaign in ENMU history.
- Eastern continues the series with a doubleheader tomorrow against the Chaps. The first game from Greyhound Baseball Field is set for 3 p.m., while the second game is expected to begin at 6 p.m.
