PORTALES, N.M. – Silver team came out on top during Friday night's spring game at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium, 14-13.
With under ten seconds remaining in the game, Silver had one more shot to put the game in their favor and they did just that.
Dalton Flowers found open space in the corner of the endzone and hauled in the game-clinching touchdown on a chilly night in Portales.
Fans were treated to a game that consisted of four 12-minute quarters featuring two teams (Green and Silver). The two teams squared off against each other and showcased the work put in over the last month during spring practices.
Head coach
Kelley Lee also took time during the contest's halftime to recognize some student-athletes with annual awards.
Christian Griego and
Matthew Quartieri were given the "Leader of the Pack" award.
Noe Quiroz and
Raheim Ross earned the "Hungry Hound" recognition.
Dawson Hall and
Esaias Swindle took home the "Iron Dog."
Jarius Stewart,
Chad Ragle, and midyear transfer Cyrus Moore were honored with the "Top Dog" award.
Friday's game brought nearly a thousand spectators, including several visitors who came for the football program's junior day. Both teams were not afraid to use trickery throughout the game, including an onside kick attempt that ended up becoming the Green team's only touchdown of the game as it was recovered by the receiving team and taken all the way to the endzone.
Some of the leading defenders between both teams included
Samu Vave,
Matthew Quartieri,
Dylan Quartieri, Fordham Parks,
J.J. Silver, and
Nate Gensler. All of them had multiple stops or key deflections to keep the contest low scoring.
The special teams crew battled a difficult wind. They managed to go perfect on point-after attempts and finished 2-for-3 on field goal attempts.
The first, third, and fourth quarters favored the run game for both squads. The second quarter featured more passing plays as both sides tried to score quickly in the closing minutes of the half. Both touchdowns by Silver team came from a pass.
"It's always fun to showcase the work from spring practices," said head coach
Kelley Lee. "I am looking forward to August and watching this team compete"
