No. 24 Eastern New Mexico men's basketball takes care of business in Wichita Falls

Greyhound men's basketball beats Midwestern State, 84-60, in defensive-centered affair

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 24 Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is back on a roll after an 84-60 road win over Midwestern State.

"Our guards allowed us to go out and run," said head coach Daven Võ when asked about the fast start in tonight's game. "They set the tone with full court defense and established their presence early."

Not only did ENMU score the game's first nine points, but they extended the advantage, 27-5, over the first 12 minutes. Eastern had six steals in that span and four of them went to the credit of Cooper Jackson. Jackson finished with five steals and four assists in a game where defense established the tone for Eastern New Mexico. The Hounds forced 18 Mustang turnovers.

Mo Austin led the team with a career-high seven steals. He added 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting. The only shots he missed came from behind the arc. Austin's energy boosted the team to their seventh road win of the season. It matches the most road victories since 2003-04.

Eastern continued to keep the pedal to the metal and held a 41-20 advantage going into halftime intermission. The performance was a true team effort and continued into the second half. ENMU stomped to an 80-45 lead with six minutes remaining in the contest. From that point on, the Greyhounds saw a handful of newcomers play the rest of the way.

Jose Murillo and Treyvon Byrd both scored 18 points in the win. Both players were major reasons why Eastern won the battle in the paint, 58-18. The Greyhounds don't connect on the three-point shot very often. Instead, the gritty play offensively with the "ground and pound" style and transition play defined the win. Eastern outscored the Mustangs in fastbreak points, 29-11.

ENMU also continues to be one of the best field goal percentage shooting teams. They came into tonight's game ranked second in the Lone Star Conference and made 34-of-68 (50%) from the field despite only going 3-of-18 from behind the arc.

The rebounding battle was also an important facet in the win. Eastern had 41 rebounds compared to 31 for MSU. Murillo nearly had a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds. He also swatted a team-high three blocks.

ENMU shared the rock well among the whole team. Jackson had four assists. Modibo Sanogo was effective tonight with five rebounds, four points, three assists, and two blocks in just 13 minutes of play.

Austin Abrams contributed well for Eastern. The Maryland native scored 10 points on 3-of-6 shots. Abrams made all four of his free throws in an effort that saw ENMU convert on 13-of-16 of their attempts from the charity stripe.

Mika Tangermann started in his sixth game this season for Eastern New Mexico. The freshman scored eight points, including sinking two three-pointers. He totaled three rebounds and three assists.

Midwestern State shot poorly from the floor making just 18-of-53 (34%). They had three scorers in double figures with Jonathan Jackson leading the way with 14 points.

A top 25 matchup is in store for Eastern New Mexico as they travel to face No. 5 LCU on Saturday. Tickets are available on the Lubbock Christian website.
