Ryan Weaver's multi-homer day carries Greyhounds past Buffs in game one of doubleheader

Eastern New Mexico splits doubleheader against West Texas A&M

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball split a doubleheader against West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon. ENMU won 11-10 on a walkoff in game one and fell by double digits in game two.

Game One
ENMU 11
WT 10

Eastern New Mexico snapped a six-game losing skid with a walkoff homerun off the bat of Ryan Weaver. The two-run blast over the right field wall sealed the deal for the Greyhounds in a battle that saw each team finding ways to respond to scoring opportunities.

"Challenged the team today," said head coach Riley Price when asked about the win. "It was awesome to see our guys come together and continue to fight."

Déjà vu was in store for the Hounds after giving up five runs in the first inning. ENMU did not let the deficit phase them as they made the first of three comebacks. Eastern plated five runs in the second inning, which included a two-RBI single from Jackson Meng followed by a three-run homer from Ryan Weaver.

WT retook the lead in the third inning and held onto the advantage until Eastern tied it up in the bottom half of the fifth off an RBI-single by Grant Gilooly.

It all seemed over in the seventh inning after West Texas A&M took a four-run lead off a grand slam from Jake Alwine. The towering shot put the Buffs up in the contest and made it look like WT would come away with a second-straight win over ENMU.

Eastern did not let the four-run deficit erase their plans to match the Buffs efforts. They stayed patient at the plate and earned three-straight walks to load the bases. A two-RBI single from Gilooly got the game within two runs. ENMU would load the bases once again and set up a great opportunity for Jackson Meng with nobody out. Meng drove in a run, but grounded into a double play.

With one runner on third, Ryan Weaver came up to the plate. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Weaver hit his second homer of the day and clinched the one-run victory for ENMU.

Game Two
WT 17
ENMU 6

Greyhound baseball fell to WT in the nightcap after an exciting win earlier in the day. West Texas A&M got a quick lead with four runs in the second inning and a fifth in the top half of the third.

ENMU did not give up as they plated six runs in the third inning and took a slight lead. The advantage did not hold long as WT scored one run in the fourth inning.

The fifth inning was the true difference maker between West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. The Buffs earned nine runs in the frame. Eight of those runs came after what could have been the inning ending strikeout which turned out to give the WT runner an opportunity to reach first base safely after the catcher dropped the pitch. The visitors pushed through and broke ahead with a 15-6 lead going into the bottom of the inning.

WT wound up winning 17-6 and earning a second win over ENMU this weekend. Five Hounds combined for all five hits in the game. Gilooly had a game-high three RBI's. The two teams play the getaway on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
